Mark Schwarzer has insisted that Micky van de Ven simply cannot be left out of the Premier League Team of the Season so far, given the start that the Dutchman has had to life in England.

Some eyebrows might have been raised when Tottenham shelled out £43m to sign the 22-year-old from Wolfsburg, with the defender arriving in North London on the back of just one good season in the Bundesliga.

Even some Spurs fans were a little underwhelmed and felt that the club could have done more to strengthen in central defence.

However, from the second that he set foot on the pitch, Van de Ven has been absolutely flawless, with his electric pace and his technical quality making him a perfect fit for Ange Postecoglou’s system.

In fact, it would not be unfair to say that the Dutchman has actually looked the more senior partner at times despite being next to a World Cup winner in Cristian Romero, having displayed maturity beyond his years.

Micky Van de Ven – Team of the Season so far

Schwarzer admitted that he has been blown over by Van de Ven so far, remarking that he would be a huge miss for Tottenham over the next few weeks.

The former Middlesbrough goalkeeper said on The Optus Sport Football Podcast: “I’m going to pick my one now, another defender. I’m going to say, another Spurs player, Micky Van de Ven”, to which Thomas Sorensen replied: “He’s in mine as well.”

Schwarze then added: “Well we’re unanimous, that’s absolutely brilliant because I think he’s been absolutely brilliant and a big, big loss for Spurs and by the sounds of things he’s out for a considerable time which is a real shame as he’s been absolutely awesome so far.”

Tottenham’s recruitment team and Postecoglou deserve a lot of credit for the acquisitions of Van de Ven and Vicario, neither of whom was the first choice of many supporters. The defender and the goalkeeper have not put a foot wrong since arriving through the door.
