James Maddison has named Paul Gascoigne as one former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder he would love to have in the current team.

The 56-year-old retired English midfielder spent four seasons at the North London club from 1988 to 1992. He made 96 appearances for Spurs, scoring 21 goals and providing six assists (Transfermarkt).

After leaving Tottenham, Gazza also had three prolific seasons at Lazio before eventually becoming somewhat of a journeyman. He retired after a very short stint with Boston United in 2024.

Playing in the same position as Gascoigne did for the majority of his career, Maddison is thriving at Tottenham. He has three goals and five assists from just 12 appearances for the club (Transfermarkt).

Maddison wants Gascoigne in the current Spurs team

When asked which former Spurs player he would choose to play along with right now, Maddison went for the Tottenham and England legend, Paul Gascoigne.

Speaking in a Q&A with Spurs’ official social media account, the English midfielder revealed that his dad was a huge fan of Gascoigne whilst he was growing up.

He said: “I think the first one I’d probably have to say is Gazza, just because he was my dad’s favourite player growing up and I used to watch clips of him purely because my dad loved the way he played.

“Obviously, I got the pleasure of meeting him at the last England camp, which was very surreal, kind of a pinch-me moment. I’d probably bring Gazza back in and have him in midfield with me.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The prospect of having Gazza in an Ange Postecoglou midfield is absolutely enticing. Few players had the natural talent that Gascoigne possessed and he certainly would have been perfect for how the Australian gaffer wants us to play.

We do have Maddison though, whose flair and creativity make him a joy to watch. As he tries and carves an identity for himself at Tottenham, let’s hope he can perform even better than Gascoigne and help us win the elusive silverware.
