The Daily Mail have revealed that Ange Postecoglou has been straight-forward with Eric Dier about where he is in the pecking order, with the centre-back said to be appreciative of the clarity.

Among the many surprises in Postecoglou’s starting eleven for the clash against Aston Villa, perhaps the biggest was that Dier was left on the bench, with Emerson Royal starting at centre-back alongside Ben Davies.

When asked why he left the 29-year-old out, the Tottenham head coach explained after the game that he felt Emerson would be able to cope better with the direct nature of the Villa forwards and insisted that he felt his backline did well despite his side’s 2-1 loss (Football.London).

Postecoglou has at least been honest with Eric Dier

The Mail now explained that right from day one, Postecoglou has been honest with Dier about where he features in his plans – something that the experienced defender is quite thankful for.

The report adds that the England international ‘has not been a moment’s trouble behind the scenes’ and has remained professional despite his peripheral role.

The outlet adds that following Postecoglou’s selection decision against Villa, it is now increasingly clear that Dier does not have a future at Spurs under the Australian.

However, the publication adds that with the centre-back’s contract expiring next summer, there are ‘no guarantees’ that he would be open to leaving in January.

The fact that Postecoglou left Dier out of the side despite the fact that Romero was suspended and Van de Ven was injured, is evidence that there is no way back for the Englishman.

The same can be said of Hojbjerg, who did not make the eleven even though Bissouma, Sarr and Maddison were not available.
