Tottenham Hotspur full-back Pedro Porro has opened up on the exit of Harry Kane earlier this summer, admitting that it was a ‘painful’ affair for everyone involved.

Kane joined Bayern Munich from Spurs in the summer in a protracted transfer saga that dominated the headlines in the summer transfer window. The deal was finalised for a reported fee in excess of €100 million ($110m) bringing the curtain down on a 19-year-old career for the forward in N17 (ESPN).

He departed Spurs as the club’s all-time top goalscorer and was just 47 shy of eclipsing Alan Shearer’s Premier League record, the academy graduate played 430 times for Spurs, scoring 278 goals and providing 64 assists across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Whilst everyone widely expected him to succeed at Bayern Munich, not even Kane would have envisioned the start he has had to life in Germany. In just 18 matches for Bayern this season, he has already scored 22 goals and provided seven assists (Transfermarkt).

Porro admits he wishes Kane had stayed at Spurs

Speaking to the Telegraph, Porro opened up on the exit of Harry Kane, admitting that it was a very painful saga in the summer.

He said: “Kane’s exit was painful for everyone because he was the heart and soul of the club. I would have liked to have enjoyed Kane more because we didn’t spend much time together. He is a special striker, used to scoring goals everywhere. He has not found it difficult to adapt to Bayern. He is undoubtedly one of the best in the world.”

“However, I think we at Tottenham have been able to overcome that absence quickly. Maybe there are more authoritative voices now. Son, for example, has taken the baton. Since Kane left, he’s stepped up, he’s taken responsibility and you can feel that inside and outside the dressing room. People usually underestimate him, maybe because he was always in the background, but he’s an out-and-out player.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Whilst Kane’s exit a few days before the new season left a bitter taste in the mouth, all the parties involved have moved on pretty well. While Kane has had a great start to life in Germany, we have had a great start to life under Ange Postecoglou and have moved on quickly.

James Maddison admitted that he was on the receiving end of some banter at Tottenham in the summer, with many questioning if he was waiting for Harry Kane to depart so that he could take the number ten shirt.

Tottenham and Bayern Munich were seemingly locked in talks over a deal for Kane all summer, with the transfer eventually being agreed just before the start of the Premier League season.

As expected, the 31-year-old has taken the Bundesliga by storm and the striker looks to be in with a good chance to end his long wait for silverware this season given Bayern’s impressive start to the campaign and having booked their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Some may have been surprised by the timing of Kane’s switch, given that he was just 47 goals away from Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal record

However, Maddison expects the England captain to continue playing until his late thirties and believes he could still return to England in the future to break the record.

Maddison on taking over Harry Kane’s number ten shirt

The Spurs playmaker told Amazon Prime Video about Kane’s switch to Bayern: “I’m really happy for him to go to a top club. Did I want him to stay? Of course, I did.

“He’s not over-reliant on pace so I could see him playing for years and years and it wouldn’t surprise me if he had his eye on that goal-scoring record in the Prem.”

Maddison has proven to be a worthy heir to Kane’s number ten shirt, with the attacking midfielder taking his game to a new level since his switch to Tottenham prior to his injury.

When asked about taking the number ten shirt, the 26-year-old responded: “It all happened so quick. Me and H had a bit of banter. I was wearing no.71 in pre-season and I was getting a bit of stick.

“We wanted to see and weigh up what number I was going to wear. There was a bit of banter – ‘Madders, are you waiting for Harry to go?’ I would have stayed 71 believe me to keep him!”

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that Spurs temporarily handed Maddison the number 71 shirt was evidence that the club always expected the Kane deal to eventually go through and for the number ten shirt to become available.  Hopefully he can continue where he left off when he returns from his ankle injury.

Martin Lipton revealed that Brentford striker Ivan Toney was desperate to join Tottenham Hotspur back when Manchester United were confident of signing Harry Kane.

Tottenham have been linked with a move for the Brentford striker for quite some time now. The Sun claimed recently that Chelsea were confident the North London club would make a move for the striker in January. The Blues also want to sign the 27-year-old.

The report added that Arsenal could compete with Chelsea and Tottenham for the player’s signature. Who comes out on top in this all-London battle remains to be seen.

Toney was handed a ban in relation to betting allegations and is expected to return in January. The 27-year-old is an integral part of how Brentford play but has been linked with an exit from the Bees for quite some time now.

Last season, the Brentford striker was on fire, scoring 21 goals and providing five assists in 35 appearances for Thomas Frank’s side (Transfermarkt). Toney has a contract that expires in 2025.

Toney was desperate to join Spurs in the past

Speaking on The Spurs Show Podcast, Martin Lipton has claimed Ivan Toney was desperate to join Spurs 18 months ago when the Red Devils wanted to sign Harry Kane.

“I know for a fact that 18 months ago, when United thought they were going to get Kane, Toney was desperate to go to Spurs, and his agent was pushing really hard”

Spurs Web Opinion

We still haven’t replaced Harry Kane who left us for Bayern Munich in the summer. While Spurs have performed well so far, a natural number nine is needed to be sustainable in the long run.

Ivan Toney perfectly fits the profile Ange Postecoglou looks for in his striker. That said, getting into a bidding war with Chelsea and Arsenal really doesn’t make sense. I feel we might be outpriced in the race for the Brentford man.

Harry Kane has opened up on his decision to leave Tottenham Hotspur and join Bayern Munich in the summer, calling it a mad experience.

Spurs’s all-time record goalscorer leaving the club in the summer was a bitter pill to swallow. After all, Kane had been at the North London club for 19 long years and nobody wanted to see the day of his exit finally arrive.

Kane played 430 times for Spurs, scoring 278 goals and providing 64 assists (Transfermarkt). When his transfer to Bayern Munich was announced, the Englishman was just 47 goals away from eclipsing Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goals record.

Since joining the German giants, Kane has set the Bundesliga alight with his goalscoring performances. In just 18 matches for Bayern this season, he has scored 22 goals and provided seven assists (Transfermarkt)

Spurs have had an impressive start to the season as well. They were unbeaten in the first 10 Premier League games before losing three on the bounce. They find themselves just six points off the top of the table after that draw with Man City at the weekend.

Kane opens up on ‘mad’ Bayern Munich transfer

In an interview with FourFourTwo, Harry Kane has opened up on his decision to move to Bayern Munich from Spurs in the summer.

He said: “It was a bit of a mad experience, to be honest. I didn’t really know what to expect… I was stepping out of my comfort zone.

“Last season, all I focused on was Spurs and trying to help the club finish as high as possible in the table. Once the season finished, I spoke to Spurs and explained that I felt it was time to move on and push myself as far as possible.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Even the most ardent of Spurs fans would have not been optimistic about this season following Kane’s departure. Ange Postecoglou has really managed to turn the situation around though with his astute management.

Despite the three losses, we find ourselves in a great position this season. A win against Manchester City this weekend will give us a lot of confidence and let’s hope we can get the better of Pep Guardiola’s team.

Fernando Llorente believes that Real Madrid made a mistake by letting Harry Kane join Bayern Munich in the summer, insisting that his former Tottenham teammate would have been ‘perfect’ for Los Blancos.

Prior to his switch to Bayern in the summer, Kane was mooted as a target for the likes of Real Madrid (Football Espana), Paris Saint-Germain (Telegraph) and Manchester United (Mirror).

However, it was the Bundesliga giants who secured the England captain’s services and even though they paid what was a club-record fee for the striker, it already looks like a bargain, with the 29-year-old having scored 22 goals and provided seven assists in 17 matches for the German side far (Transfermarkt).

Would Kane have been perfect for Real Madrid?

Llorente knows well of Kane’s qualities, having shared a dressing room with him at Tottenham for two years.

In fact, it was due to the England captain’s presence that the Spaniard did not get much game time with the Lilywhites, although he did play an important role in Tottenham’s march to the Champions League final in 2019 when Kane was out injured.

When asked if Real Madrid should have sighed his former Spurs teammate, Llorente has now told AS: “He would have been ideal. He was the perfect signing for Real Madrid. He’s a phenomenon.

“Maybe Madrid thought they [Tottenham] were asking for too much money because of his age, but I had no doubts about his performance because I have seen him up close and I know what he is capable of. He would have been the perfect striker for Madrid.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is clear that Florentino Perez remains keen on eventually taking Kylian Mbappe to the Santiago Bernabeu, which is why he seemingly passed up on Kane this summer.

Real Madrid may come to regret their decision to allow the former Tottenham to join Bayern if Thomas Tuchel’s men manage to win the Champions League.

Jason Cundy has said that Tottenham missed Harry Kane against Aston Villa on Sunday, suggesting that the Lilywhites would have emerged comfortable winners if the England captain was upfront.

Spurs only have themselves to blame for Sunday’s loss as they created more than enough chances to have put the game to bed in the first half.

The 2-1 loss means that Villa leapfrogged Tottenham into fourth spot but Ange Postecoglou was relatively upbeat in his post-match press conference even though his side fell to their third straight defeat.

The Australian revealed that while he did not like what he saw against Wolves ahead of the international break, his side’s performance against the Villans was one of their best of the season so far, adding that results will turn around if they keep delivering similar displays (Football.London).

Harry Kane would have won Spurs the game

Cundy insisted that it was simply a case of Spurs not having someone to put the ball in the back of the net.

The former Chelsea man told Jamie O’Hara on talkSPORT (27/11/23): “You (Spurs) played well. But you know what it’s the first time you looked like you have missed Kane. I think with Kane up top, you win that game.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that someone of Kane’s calibre would have put those chances away, but in fairness to Son, there was nothing wrong with his finishing. It is not often that one has three goals ruled out for marginal offside calls in the same game.

Bild journalist Christian Falk has revealed that Tottenham has a have a right of first refusal to re-sign Harry Kane from Bayern Munich when the striker eventually decides to leave Bavaria.

Kane has had an outstanding start to life at Bayern, having scored 22 times and provided seven assists in 17 appearances across all competitions so far (Transfermarkt).

The England captain looks on course to break all sorts of records this season and he will also be hoping to win the first piece of silverware of his career, with Thomas Tuchel’s men expected to win the Bundesliga and installed as one of the early favourites for the Champions League.

Daniel Levy revealed back in September that Spurs do have a buy-back clause for Kane but he provided no additional detail on the nature of the clause (Evening Standard).

However, it was subsequently reported by The Daily Mail that the centre-forward may not consider a return to his boyhood as his relationship with Levy had soured during the summer due to the way the Spurs chairman dragged his feet on the transfer.

Tottenham can match any offer for Harry Kane

Falk has explained that the clause that exists in the contract would allow Tottenham to match any offer that Bayern accept for Kane in the future.

The journalist told CaughtOffside: “Harry Kane is feeling very happy in Munich, he’s found his house and will be doing much better when his family is with him.

“His needs are being fulfilled, everyone admires him, his teammates love him because of his behaviour. He’s doing so well in the team.

“There is, as I’ve previously mentioned, a ‘matching right’, which allows Tottenham the right of first refusal should Kane move away from Munich at some point in the future. However, I don’t think there’s a chance at the moment of an early exit from Munich, as he’s only at the beginning of his career at Bayern.

“He wants to win titles at Munich. For him, it’s a big move to leave Tottenham and England but now he’s done it he’s aware of the many advantages that are available to him.

“He certainly has a bit more freedom when he’s out of the house; the people of Munich are very respectful and he can [live] a little bit more easily.

“He’s not as central in the focus as he was in England. I don’t think there are any thoughts on his end of leaving Bayern Munich in the next few years.”

Spurs Web Opinion

This right to match for Kane is irrelevant for the time being as it is unlikely that the striker would consider leaving the Bundesliga for at least three years.

If and when he is ready to return to the Premier League, it remains to be seen if Spurs would be willing to spend big to re-sign a 34-year-old or 35-year-old Kane.

Harry Kane has insisted that he always wanted to test himself in a new league and admitted that he is delighted with the way things are going for him at Bayern Munich.

Kane has been the most consistent number nine for almost a decade in the best league in the world and there were thus never any doubts that he would succeed at Bayern.

However, maybe even he would not have expected to start as well as he has in Germany, with the 30-year-old having found the back of the net 21 times and provided seven assists in 16 matches across all competitions so far (Transfermarkt).

Some might have been surprised at Kane’s decision to leave the Premier League when he was so close to Alan Shearer’s record but the striker revealed that he was keen to experience a new culture.

Harry Kane always wanted to leave England

Kane told Channel 4 (via Daily Mail): “It was always something I wanted to do [move abroad]. I was at Spurs for 19 years but always in the back of my mind wanted to experience a new league, a new culture and team.

“Things in football come together at the right time and Bayern were there and I was excited by the challenge I face going there.”

The former Tottenham man is yet to win any silverware in his career, but he is dreaming of ending the drought by winning the ultimate prizes with club and country this season.

The centre-forward added: “The Bundesliga and Champions League are what we are setting out to win and the Euros with England we are setting out to win.

“The teams I am in have really good chance of winning those trophies. The aim with England is to win Euros, we came extremely close in the last one and that made us hungrier to come back and win this one. No excuses, we want to win titles and to do so with England would be the most special feeling ever.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If Bayern manage to win the Champions League or if England win Euro 2024, Kane would have a very good chance of winning next year’s Ballon d’Or. The striker certainly looks on course to break all sorts of records in Germany.

According to German outlet Abend Zeitung, Bayern Munich agreed to play two friendlies with Tottenham as part of the deal to take Harry Kane to the Allianz Arena.

As one would expect of a transfer of this size, widely different figures have been reported over the last few months with regards to the fee Bayern paid for Kane in the summer.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has suggested that the fee could rise to as high as £120m if certain add-ons are met.

However, Bayern president Herbert Hainer claimed last month that the German club will not even have to pay €100m (£86.7m) for the striker unless they win several trophies (FAZ via TZ).

Two friendlies agreed between Spurs and Bayern

This has now been backed up by AZ, who say that the fee Bayern paid for the England captain ‘was ultimately less than 100 million euros’.

It is explained that as a part of the deal, two friendly games were agreed between the clubs, with all of the proceeds from the matches going to Spurs.

The outlet adds that it is unclear where and when these two friendly matches between Bayern and Tottenham will take place.

Spurs Web Opinion

This makes a lot of sense from Spurs’ standpoint as the club earns millions in gate receipts and food and drink sales for each game that they host at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Friendlies against Bayern are likely to be a sell-out.

Harry Kane made no mention of Tottenham Hotspur superstar Son Heung-min whilst building his ‘perfect striker’ based on a number of attributes.

Kane, who spent 19 years at the North London club left in the summer to join Bayern Munich for a reported fee of £100m. Of these, he played eight seasons with current club captain Son Heung-min and the duo formed an enviable partnership.

Such has been the chemistry between the two players on the pitch that the duo together have recorded a Premier League record 47 goal combinations for Spurs over all these seasons (BBC). Of these 47 goals, Son has 24 and Kane has 23.

The duo had their most prolific period between 2020 and 2022 when they linked up 21 times for Spurs goals. It is fair to say that they are one of the best strike partnerships the league has ever seen.

Once Kane left the club, the onus fell on the South Korean to lead the club with his performances. Wearing the armband, Son has scored eight times and provided one assist in 13 appearances across all competitions this season (Transfermarkt).

Meanwhile, Kane has gone on from strength to strength at Bayern Munich, recording a whopping 21 goals and seven assists from 16 appearances across all competitions this season (Transfermarkt). Spurs have also not felt the absence of the Englishman, thanks to Son’s performances.

After spending all these seasons together and holding such enviable records, Harry Kane would have been expected to name Son in at least one of the attributes as he aimed to build the ‘perfect striker’.

Here is who Kane chose to build his perfect striker, as posted by ESPN UK on X (formerly known as Twitter):

Movement –  Edinson Cavani

Speed – Cristiano Ronaldo

Heading – Peter Crouch

Finishing – Harry Kane (he chose himself)

Strength – Didier Drogba

Dribbling – Kylian Mbappe

Link up play – Wayne Rooney

Work Rate – Jude Bellingham

Spurs Web Opinion

It is easy to read too much into such things. Kane could have answered on the logic that Son wasn’t a striker when he was here at the club. Thus, he could have not considered him as an option for any of these questions.

Ideally, we think Son could have made one or two of these categories. The South Korean could have definitely been an option for speed and work rate. Kane had a beautiful relationship with Son on the pitch and this might have just been a genuine oversight. It is better not to read too much into this.

Former Spurs star Jermaine Jenas has admitted that he did not expect Harry Kane to have such a successful career when he first saw him during his younger days.

Jenas, now a well-respected pundit, played for the likes of Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa during his Premier League career, and he was in N17 when Kane was just breaking through the ranks.

Harry Kane ended his 19-year-long association with the North London club when he joined Bayern Munich in the summer for a reported fee of £100m.

He has had a sensational start to life in Germany, netting 21 goals and providing seven assists in just 16 appearances across all competitions. (Transfermarkt)

Kane is a Tottenham Hotspur legend in every right and is the club’s leading goalscorer. He has scored 278 goals and provided 64 assists in 430 appearances for the North London club. (Transfermarkt)

Things weren’t always rosy for the English superstar during the formative years of his career though, as he spent many seasons out on loan at clubs like Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City before finally making the cut at Tottenham.

Jenas did not see Harry Kane’s stardom coming

Speaking on talkSPORT Drive with Andy Goldstein, Jenas revealed that he thought Harry Kane was going to be more like Teddy Sheringham and felt he was not athletic enough as a striker.

He said: “If you watched Harry when he was at Spurs, playing under Mourinho and playing under Conte, they played very deep as a team. So they would suck teams onto them and Harry would drop into the little pockets of space, which as a kid, is how he used to play when he’d come and train with us in the first team.

“Everybody thought he was going to be like Teddy Sheringham and then Mauricio (Pochettino) turned him into more of an athlete and he would run in behind.

“When I was at Tottenham and he was probably 16 or 17 coming through the ranks with the likes of Andros Townsend, Danny Rose and Jake Livermore and so on.”

Jermaine Jenas admitted that when he first saw Harry Kane train, he felt that the Englishman did not have it in him to cut it at the highest level of the game. He had no qualms in admitting that he had been proven wrong though.

He added: “No, but this is part of Harry’s brilliance. He’s diligent, he works harder than the next and he’s driven by everybody who has told him he’s not good enough, essentially.

“That’s what he had for the early parts of his career and every now and then you’d see that he was working harder or working on his finishing and spending time speaking to Robbie Keane and Jermaine Defoe and getting information and putting into practice.

“Then it was like, right, he’s now got the make-up to do what he needs to do but from an athletic point of view he wasn’t as quick as he needed to be and wasn’t as strong or sharp as he needed to be, he just had a hunger to score goals.

“The rest was put together by Tim Sherwood, who played a massive part in his early development and then Mauricio probably took that on to another level.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Harry Kane has been one of the best players the Premier League has seen in the past 10 years and we can consider ourselves lucky that it came in a Tottenham shirt.

We trusted him and backed him at a time when everyone thought he did not have it in him to succeed at the highest level and nineteen years later, we managed to sell him on for a huge fee.

The doors of Tottenham will always be open to Harry Kane but that is a subject for the future. Right now, we can always be grateful for everything that he has done for us.

Harry Kane has named James Maddison as his funniest England teammate and the striker remarked that the Tottenham man would do extremely well at ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’.

Maddison has quickly won over the Tottenham fan base, not just because of his on-pitch performances but also because of the authenticity in the way he speaks to the media.

The 26-year-old has also evidently become quite popular in the Tottenham changing room, which is perhaps a testament to his infectious personality.

Ange Postescoglou was quick to notice the attacking midfielder’s leadership skills, naming him as one of his two vice-captains even though the former Leicester man only arrived at Spurs this summer.

Unfortunately, Tottenham fans never got to see how Maddison would link up with Kane but that is a partnership that England supporters would want to see a lot of in next summer’s European championship.

James Maddison is a good player to have in the camp

By the sounds of it, the pair get along quite well with each other, with the Bayern striker describing the midfielder as ‘cheeky’.

When asked who the biggest prankster was at Bayern and England, the striker told ESPN: “At Bayern, I’d probably say Serge Gnabry, he’s welcomed me in the best way possible with a few pranks here and there. He’s a really good guy, has a few jokes in him, and then probably someone like Madders, yeah, I’d probably put Madders in there he’s a bit cheeky like that yeah.”

When asked which teammates he would like to see on I’m a Celebrity, Kane said: “James Maddison, I think he’d be good value, I think he could (win) actually, he has a great personality.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Similarly to Ange, Maddison also comes across as quite emotionally intelligent and it is not difficult to see why the midfielder and the Tottenham head coach get along quite well.

Harry Kane has named Eric Dier as the player he would not want to sit next to during a long flight, revealing that the Tottenham defender falls asleep anywhere and everywhere.

Kane might have departed Tottenham in the summer but he has still got some great friends at the club, not least Dier, who he has played alongside for club and country for nine years.

It has been well documented that the striker and the centre-back are close friends, with the duo, along with Matt Doherty, even forming a mini movie club during away trips when the Wolves man was at the North London club (The Athletic).

Eric Dier is not a good travel companion, says Kane

However, the Bayern Munich star has admitted that the 29-year-old is not great company during long trips as he is a heavy sleeper.

When asked which teammate he would not want to sit next to during a long-haul flight, Kane told ESPN: “I’m going to put Eric Dier in there, he just sleeps anywhere, no conversation from him, he’d probably sleep the whole 12 hours or however long the flight is, so, sorry Eric, I need more from you.”

Interestingly, the possibility of Kane reuniting with Dier has been raised recently, with Football Insider reporting earlier this week that the defender has emerged as a shock target for Bayern Munich.

The outlet suggested that Thomas Tuchel values the Tottenham star’s versatility and that the centre-back is open to a switch to Bavaria.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if Kane gives glowing reviews of Dier to Tuchel, I would be extremely surprised if Bayern made a move for the Spurs star. I also do not think the 29-year-old would be too keen on warming the bench at the Allianz Arena.

Harry Kane has admitted that it was a strange experience to make a high-profile switch in the summer, having been at the same club since the start of his career.

While there was plenty of speculation all summer linking Kane with a move to Bayern Munich, the transfer was completed just days before the start of the new season.

The move was not without any hiccups, with some reports indicating that the striker had to wait at Stanstead airport for a long time after Daniel Levy decided to alter the terms of the agreement at the final moment (Mirror).

The transfer did eventually go through and Kane has said that while it was ‘a mad experience’, he insisted that he was always confident that a deal would be struck between the parties.

When asked about how the move unfolded, the 30-year-old told FourFourTwo: “It was a bit of a mad experience, to be honest.

“I didn’t really know what to expect, as I’d been at Spurs for 19 years and was really happy there. So I was stepping out of my comfort zone – it was a first for me to feel how these transfers happen, and to be a part of one.

“Last season, all I focused on was Tottenham and trying to help the club finish as high as possible in the table. Once the season finished, I spoke to Spurs and explained that I felt it was time to move on and push myself as far as possible.

“I then went away on holiday and that’s when talks started progressing. I was confident the clubs would eventually come to an agreement.

“I woke up on the Saturday morning, went straight to training, met all the players for the first time, then we had the game that night. I was at the airport just the previous afternoon. Like I said, it was mad.”

Harry Kane is thriving at Bayern Munich

The England captain has settled in well at the Allianz Arena, having made an outstanding start to his time in Germany.

The former Spurs man, who has scored 21 goals and registered seven assists in just 16 matches across all competitions so far, opened up on his experience of integrating into life at the Bavarian club and in the Bundesliga.

He added: “Those first few days felt like joining a new school. Putting faces to names, introducing yourself, everyone asking how you are. I’ve faced a lot of the lads in the past, so it was nice to get to know them all personally. It was a bit surreal, but I was itching to get going.

“It felt amazing to make my debut. The atmosphere there was something special, and I’ve since realised that wasn’t a one-off. German football has some of the most passionate fans I’ve seen.

“I remember waiting to come on, hearing the drums and looking at all the banners and flags. It gave me goosebumps. The fan culture in Germany blew me away from the start.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Kane is going to break all sorts of records at Bayern and it looks like the striker will finally get the recognition his talent deserves as he is going to win plenty of silverware.

Football Insider have claimed that Eric Dier is now ‘seriously interested’ in quitting Tottenham Hotspur in January after Bayern Munich entered the race for his signature.

It has been widely reported over the last month that Dier wishes to run his contract down and leave Spurs as a free agent next summer so that he has more options to choose from regarding his next destination (Alasdair Gold – Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham).

However, The Daily Mirror claimed last week that Daniel Levy would look to command a fee for the 29-year-old in January rather than letting him run his contract down.

The outlet added that the likes of Sporting Lisbon and AS Roma have shown an interest in making a move for the experienced defender mid-season.

It then emerged a few days ago that Bayern are also exploring a move for Dier in January, with the Tottenham man’s versatility said to appeal to Thomas Tuchel (Football Insider).

Dier is now tempted to join Kane at Bayern Munich

If Football Insider’s latest update is to be believed, the Spurs star has now changed his stance after hearing of Bayern’s interest.

It is asserted that Dier would be interested in swapping the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the Allianz Arena in January and reuniting with Harry Kane at Bavaria.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am quite sceptical about this report as Dier will know that he will likely be the fourth-choice centre-back at Bayern. His chances of game time at the Bundesliga club are even lower than it at Spurs.

The 29-year-old would probably want to join a club where he would be an automatic starter, given that he is theoretically in the peak years of his career.

James Maddison has admitted that he was gutted when Harry Kane left Tottenham just ahead of the start of the new season.

The Kane transfer saga had been dragging on right from the start of the summer and it seemed at one point as if the striker would stay and see out the final year of his contract at Tottenham.

Some Spurs fans would have been dreaming about a Maddison-Kane link-up and we saw glimpses of the partnership during pre-season.

However, the England captain did eventually end up sealing a move to Bayern Munich just ahead of Tottenham’s season opener at Brentford.

Ange Postecoglou’s men have not allowed the transfer to affect them and have looked an extremely balanced unit so far this season, so much so that some pundits have questioned if Kane leaving was a blessing in disguise for the Lilywhites (ESPN FC).

James Maddison was disappointed about Kane exit

Maddison, who has filled the creative void left by the 30-year-old, admitted that he was disappointed when the striker’s move to Bayern became official.

When asked if he was gutted at Kane’s switch, the former Leicester City man said on A League of Their Own on Sky Max: “I was, to be fair. Harry is so good, isn’t he?

“Arguably the best number nine in the world. So I wasn’t thrilled, no. But, looking at the team on paper before I went in, it’s still such a good team.

“I know they had a disappointing season, but I was still looking at the team and thinking ‘just get me in there and get me feeding those front players and we can turn those things around’. Harry has obviously left but we have started really well.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I actually think Kane’s departure has worked in Maddison’s favour as the striker would have dropped deep and occupied some of the same positions that the attacking midfielder does.

Besides, with Tottenham’s star man now gone, it has allowed the 26-year-old to step up and be one of the main men that the other players look towards to produce something special.

In his latest press conference, Mauricio Pochettino has been discussing both Daniel Levy and Harry Kane’s involvement with Tottenham Hotspur, and how the two factor into his return to the club on Monday night.

It will be almost exactly four years to the day since Pochettino was sacked by Tottenham when his Chelsea side visit North London on Monday. Just 13 days shy of the unsavoury anniversary, the Argentine will be hoping to ruin Ange Postecoglou‘s impressive unbeaten run.

Naturally, a lot has changed in that four-year period. Spurs are now onto their fourth permanent manager since letting Pochettino go, while players have come and gone in between, too.

In fact, in the starting lineup on Monday night, the only face Pochettino is likely to recognise is Heung-min Son, while the likes of Eric Dier will probably be among the substitutes.

How does Poch feel about Daniel Levy?

Pochettino’s talisman at Tottenham, Harry Kane, has moved on, of course. Chairman Daniel Levy is still here, though, and Pochettino has been asked about both of those influential figures in his latest chat with the press (via Football.London).

On the fact Kane won’t be there, Pochettino said: “It’s going to be weird seeing many years and Harry Kane is not going to be there. He’s a big part of the history of Tottenham and it will be weird not to see him.”

And, on Levy, he added: “For me, the most important person because he gave me and my coaching staff the possibility to be in Tottenham. Not only a professional relationship, a friendly relationship.

“Too many memories together, it was an amazing journey, only to say thank you to experience great things, like to build the new season. Playing in White Hart Lane, Wembley and Milton Keynes in the same year, an amazing project, I can only say thank you.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s interesting what he’s said about Levy there. You’d imagine the sacking would leave a sour note for Pochettino, plus the fact he wasn’t considered for the job this summer. But it’s nice that he is being so positive about all of this.

Pundit Janusz Michallik believes that Harry Kane’s departure has benefited Son Heung-min, with the South Korean now being able to show his effectiveness in front of goal.

Son had stepped up and delivered on a few occasions when Kane was out injured over the years, most notably in Tottenham’s run to the Champions League final in 2019.

The South Korean has filled the void left by Kane’s departure so far, having found the back of the net eight times since being moved to the number nine role by Ange Postecoglou.

Given the number of chances that Spurs create and Son’s finishing prowess, it is certainly not out of the question that the Tottenham captain could push Erling Haaland until the end in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot.

Did Harry Kane do Heung-min Son a favour?

Michallik is far from surprised at the 31-year-old’s transformation from last season, admitting that he would have major questions about Spurs if the forward is unavailable.

The pundit told ESPN FC: “I think that’s a massive question for Spurs, because, here we are, we’ll talk about it maybe a little later too, are they better or worse [without] Harry Kane? But think about it. In the past, when one was off, there was one scoring consistently.”

“Let’s not forget Heung-min Son in his last season. Now, it’s Heung-min Son. He’s benefitted from the fact that Harry Kane’s left. But if he’s not there, then I’d have a major question about Spurs.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is funny how quickly pundits have moved on from ‘Spurs will really struggle without Kane’ to ‘Spurs will really struggle without Son and Maddison’. It certainly does not take a genius to figure out that losing your best players would be a blow to any side.

Chris Sutton believes that Harry Kane will wish that he had stayed at Tottenham Hotspur now that they have started so well under Ange Postecoglou.

Many pundits expected Spurs to struggle in front of goal this season following Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich in the summer.

However, Tottenham have not had any issues finding the back of the net so far this season, having scored 22 goals in their first 10 Premier League matches, with Son Heung-min stepping up to fill the void left by the England captain.

The Lilywhites have played some exciting football and currently sit at the top of the table, having won eight and drawn two of their 10 fixtures. Spurs’ brilliant star has led some to question whether Kane’s departure was actually a blessing in disguise for the side (90 min).

The 30-year-old has hit the ground running in Bavaria, having scored 14 goals and provided seven assists in 13 matches across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Will Harry Kane regret leaving Spurs this year?

Despite his exploits at the Allianz Arena, Sutton believes that Kane will have some regret about leaving his boyhood club.

The pundit told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I bet Harry is a bit gutted he’s not at Spurs with Ange. Spurs now flying, playing attacking football. I bet there is a tiny bit of him who thinks I wish I’d have stayed in the Premier League.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Kane is the sort of person to look back on his decisions and wonder ‘what if’. The striker is incredibly single-minded and mentally strong and the only thing he would be focused on at the moment is doing well for Bayern.

Michael Owen believes that Harry Kane made a huge mistake by leaving Tottenham this summer, insisting that the striker should have stayed at his boyhood club for one more season and left on a free transfer next year.

Kane’s decision to swap Spurs for Bayern Munch in the summer perhaps came as a surprise to some, given how close the striker is to breaking Alan Shearer’s Premier League goals record.

However, the England captain has insisted since that move that the record was not something he was particularly focused on and that winning silverware was always his priority (Sky Sports Football Daily).

The 30-year-old has certainly made an impressive start to life at the Bavarian side, having scored 11 goals and provided six assists in 12 matches across all competitions so far (Transfermarkt).

Despite the numbers that Kane is posting in Germany, Owen believes that the striker should have given Tottenham one more season and could have had the option of joining any club of his choice next summer.

Did Harry Kane make a mistake by leaving Spurs?

The former Liverpool striker told DAZN Bet (as relayed by The Metro): “Harry Kane is an unbelievable player and it shouldn’t be a surprise he’s still playing well, that’s just a given. He’s such a wonderful talent.

“But I don’t agree with his move from Spurs to Bayern, as I said at the time. He should have stayed at Spurs for another year. If he was so desperate to leave and to win trophies, then he could easily have had the world in his hands by going on a Bosman transfer at the end of the season.

“If Spurs miraculously started playing well and looking like title challengers, he could have always stayed, but regardless he would have had his destiny in his hands and gone to any club he wanted to all while he was getting closer to that Premier League goalscoring record and creating the perfect legacy with the club he’s been at all his life.”

Owen added that the only way for Kane to prove him wrong would be to win the Champions League at Bayern, insisting that winning the Bundesliga would not be an impressive achievement.

He continued: “Bayern are undoubtedly one of the biggest clubs in the world but for me to win a trophy, I don’t think there’s anything really special about going and guaranteeing yourself a Bundesliga trophy. Bayern will win the league with or without Kane, so I don’t think that was particularly a reason to leave.

“The only thing is that he gets to play in the Champions League, to have a chance of winning but in my book Manchester City will win it and if it’s not them then other teams have a chance too, Bayern being one of them, but City are the standout.

“I said at the time I didn’t think it was the right thing and I still stick by that. But if he goes and wins the Treble at Bayern, you can say I was wrong, but if he only wins the Bundesliga, then I would feel as strongly as I do now that it wasn’t the right move.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While I agree with Owen’s point, I am sure that Levy would have made it clear to Kane that he had to leave this summer if he did not sign a new contract.

In a way, we are lucky that Kane wanted to ensure that Spurs get a fee for him rather than standing his ground and leaving on a free transfer in a year.
