Former Spurs footballer Aaron Lennon has revealed that Premier League rivals Liverpool showed interest in him, but he chose to sign for Tottenham.

Lennon was a fantastic servant for Spurs, arriving from Leeds United in 2005 and featuring 362 times for the North London club (Transfermarkt). His pace and dribbling ability made him stand out amongst his peers.

His career which undoubtedly peaked at Spurs went on a downward trajectory since his decision to join Everton in 2015. The 36-year-old had stints at Turkish club Kayserispor and English club Burnley before eventually calling it a day.

Former teammate Darren Bent told the talkSPORT Breakfast that he feels Lennon does not get the respect that he deserves, considering the longevity of his career.

During his time in N17, Lennon made the right wing his own, terrorising opposition left-backs. He was a traditional right-footed right winger who loved to keep the chalk on his boots, a rare commodity in today’s game.

Lennon reveals Liverpool wanted to sign him

Speaking to Stadium Astro as revealed on X (formerly known as Twitter), Aaron Lennon revealed that there was a lot of interest in him back in 2005 but joining Spurs was a no-brainer.

When asked, “Why Tottenham?”, here is what Lennon had to say about his decision.

“As I said, I remember being on a holiday with my brothers and I remember getting a phone call from my agent. I actually got a phone call from a news reporter first and they already told me you are going to Tottenham, and I was like, “Pardon!” and I am out thinking, “Is this a prank call?”.”

“We didn’t really get prank called in those days. I remember saying to my brother and then my agent had revealed to me saying, basically Leeds had agreed a fee to sell me without even coming to me. Obviously, then it’s about me agreeing personal terms and whether I want to go.”

“So I came back off the holiday, spoke to my agent, he said there were a few offers going around, there were a few interests. I think Liverpool was another who were interested at that time but we looked at the project and Tottenham were then signing a lot of the best young players and yeah, that was it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Aaron Lennon is undoubtedly one of the most underrated Spurs players of the modern era. He was an absolute menace on the right flank and would often give nightmares to some of the best left-backs in the country like Ashley Cole and Patrice Evra.

There aren’t many players like Lennon in the game right now and the concept of traditional wingers has almost gone out of the picture.

Sadly, the 36-year-old did not adapt his game with the tactical evolution and was unfortunately left behind. That doesn’t take anything away from his exploits in his prime though, and will always be celebrated by Spurs fans.

According to an update from The Standard, Lloyd Kelly could be the most viable centre-back target for Tottenham in January.

On Wednesday, The Telegraph suggested that Spurs may drop their interest in Kelly due to the centre-back’s injury owes.

It was explained that after the 25-year-old picked up a hamstring injury last weekend, there are now growing concerns at Tottenham over his fitness issues.

Lloyd Kelly may be a good target for Tottenham

However, The Standard suggest that Tottenham are still very much in the race for Kelly and are likely to get some joy if they pursue the Englishman.

They describe him as the ‘most viable’ option out of all the centre-back targets being linked with Spurs ahead of the winter window.

Spurs Web Opinion

One thing that could work in Tottneham’s favour is the fact that the club have held more of a sustained interest in Kelly over other suitors, having seemingly reached out to him over a move during the summer as well.

According to Voetbal Nieuws (as translated by Sport Witness), Tottenham are expected to scout Union Saint-Gilloise defender Koki Machida over the coming weeks.

Machida burst onto the scene at J-League side Kashima Antlers and he came up against Ange Postecoglou’s Yokohama F Marinos multiple times during the Spurs head coach’s time in Japan.

The Japanese defender joined Union SG on an 18-month loan deal in January of 2022, with the Belgian top-flight club signing him permanently this summer.

The 26-year-old has gone from strength to strength during his time in the Jupiler Pro League and it was reported by 90 min last week that his performances had altered Tottenham.

The report added that the Lilywhites believe the Japan international has the physical attributes to play in Postecoglou’s aggressive front line and the fact that he is left-footed is another big tick.

Spurs are expected to scout Koki Machida

Voetbal Nieuws have now also reported on Tottenham’s interest in Machida, suggesting that the North London club are expected to send scouts to Belgium to watch the defender in action.

The outlet adds that SG Union are set to take on Liverpool in a Europa League clash on December 16 and that fixture might be of particular interest to Spurs.

It is said that the game could put Machida ‘in the spotlight’ and if the centre-back performs well against the Reds, a move to the Premier League could get ‘closer’ for him in January.

Spurs Web Opinion

It does not appear as if Tottenham have settled on their top centre-back targets just yet. One would expect Postecoglou to meet with Johan Lange and the recruitment team over the coming days and weeks to narrow down their list of targets for each position.

Tottenham have dropped out of the top four in the Premier League table following their 2-1 loss to Aston Villa, which is their third successive defeat. Here is a look at Postecoglou’s next five fixtures in the league compared to Spurs’ top-four rivals.

Spurs’ impressive start to the season seems like a thing of the past, with the loss against Aston Villa marking their third successive defeat.

VAR and Emiliano Martinez denied Spurs what would have been a deserved win, as the Lilywhites were dominant for much of the game.

Villa managed to find the net when it mattered the most though, consigning Postecoglou to his third straight defeat. It’s all the more disappointing when you remember that, a few weeks ago, the North London club were top of the table and now they find themselves out of the top four.

The good thing for Spurs is they are still just four points from the summit. They face Manchester City next and will be looking to get back to winning ways in something of a six-pointer. Around them, Arsenal managed to get a win but City and Liverpool shared the spoils this weekend.

Spurs Web Opinion

Three consecutive losses in three games is not helping Spurs’ impressive start to the season but by no means have we put out bad performances. It is just a reflection of the lack of squad depth that is hurting us when we have the first-choice players unavailable.

Facing Manchester City next is not the most ideal scenario to get out of jail but what better way to do it, than beating the defending champions on their home turf? It’s time for us to stick around, be optimistic and continue supporting Postecoglou’s project.

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are plotting a move for Sporting Lisbon centre-back Goncalo Inacio, who is also rumoured to be on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar ahead of the January transfer window.

It has been widely reported over the last month that Spurs are prioritising signing a new centre-back in January, with a whole host of names mooted as targets for the North London club (GiveMeSport).

Earlier this week, The Daily Mail reported that Ange Postecoglou’s men have a number of names on their central defensive shortlist which includes Inacio, Marc Guehi, Jarrad Branthwaite, Malick Thiaw and Sporting Lisbon’s Morato.

The 22-year-old has developed into one of the best centre-backs in the Primeira Liga over the last couple of years and he has established himself as a starter for the Portuguese national team over the last few months.

Tottenham’s defensive ranks suffered a huge blow earlier this month when summer signing Micky van de Ven was ruled out into the new year after he suffered a serious hamstring injury during the 4-1 defeat to Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Liverpool keen on Inacio

TEAMtalk now state that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is keen on finding a new defensive partner for Virgil van Dijk and has set his sights on the Sporting player.

The outlet explains that the Reds have scouted Inacio closely for a couple of years and the academy product is willing to move to Anfield in January.

However, it is explained that Sporting do not wish to lose the defender halfway through the season and any interested clubs would instead have to meet his £52m release clause to sanction his exit.

Spurs Web Opinion

We beat Liverpool to the signature of Micky van de Ven in the summer and I am sure the Reds will want to avoid a repeat of that in January. I expect them to swiftly meet the defender’s release clause.

Tottenham know all too well that Sporting are prepared to stick to their guns when it comes to the valuation of a player, having taken the North Londoners right to the wire with their negotiations over a deal for Pedro Porro last year.

Fresh reports of Liverpool’s interest in Micky van de Ven over the summer have emerged, and it seems Virgil van Dijk was eager to get the player to move to Anfield before Spurs swooped to sign the young Dutchman.

Micky van de Ven has been one of the signings of the Premier League season thus far, and has taken no time at all to settle into the backline for Ange Postecoglous side.

Most notably, van de Ven formed a fantastic partnership alongside Cristian Romero, even helping to bring out a calmer side in the Argentinian this term.

Sadly, the 22-year-old pulled up with a hamstring injury in the defeat to Chelsea, and looks likely to be out of action until the New Year.

That leaves the Spurs defence massively exposed and needing to rely on the likes of Eric Dier for cover. Judging by the manner of the defeat against Wolves in their last game, Spurs will be desperate for van de Ven to return.

Van Dijk told van de Ven to choose Liverpool

There is a timeline in which Spurs would have never gotten their man however, as TEAMtalk reveals Virgil van Dijk told his young compatriot to choose Liverpool instead.

Tottenham eventually snapped up the 22-year-old in a deal which could rise to £43m (Sky Sports), but van Dijk had spoken to van de Ven before the switch to convince him to become his new defensive partner at Liverpool.

Ultimately, “Spurs moved faster” and were able to “close the deal” for van de Ven before Liverpool could intervene.

There is also a belief that van de Ven chose Spurs as he wanted to play first-team football more regularly and believed this was more likely in North London than at Liverpool (Miguel Delaney).

Spurs Web Opinion

I remember hearing at the time that Liverpool were looking at van de Ven and I was so worried we were going to miss out. Thankfully we got him, and we could have one of the world’s best centre-half partnerships on our hands if both he and Romero continue to develop the way we hope they will.

Liverpool youngster Jarell Quansah has revealed that he improves his game by watching and analyzing videos of Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero amongst others.

Quansah, a product of the Liverpool academy spent last season out on loan at Bristol Rovers and is currently now a part of the first-team setup under Jurgen Klopp. He has appeared nine times for the senior team across all competitions this season. (Transfermarkt)

Cristian Romero has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League since moving to Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 initially on a loan deal. He then joined permanently last season for a reported fee of £42m and has proven to be worth every penny. (Sky Sports)

The Argentinian World Cup winner has garnered a reputation for being a reckless and aggressive player which often lands him in trouble with the referees. In 75 appearances for Tottenham across all competitions, Romero has accumulated 24 yellow cards and four red cards. (Transfermarkt)

Even when answering a series of questions for the Premier League recently, his Tottenham teammate Richarlison revealed that Romero was the toughest to face in training.

Such aggressiveness got him into trouble in the recent Premier League clash against Chelsea which Tottenham eventually lost 1-4 after the 25-year-old defender was sent off for a tackle on his international teammate Enzo Fernandez.

Manager Ange Postecoglou has praised Cristian Romero a lot this season, calling him an ‘outstanding defender’ with a ‘real winner’s mindset’. He even highlighted his star defender’s leadership qualities. (Football. London)

Cristian Romero is an inspiration for Jarell Quansah

Quansah has been a real surprise package for Liverpool this season and is enjoying his breakthrough to the first team. He has been putting a lot of hard work behind the scenes though.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the 20-year-old defender has revealed extensively watching videos of world-class defenders like Sergio Ramos, Leonardo Bonucci and Cristian Romero to improve his game

“I used to get high-cam footage instead of TV footage so you could see everything, how the back line moves and a little bit of everything. You just need to ask the right people.

“The way I learn is (by) watching players. These players have played 400-500 games at the top level. It would be stupid for me not to watch them. It’d be like having a resource and just throwing it away, I couldn’t live with myself if I did that.

“I love watching different countries and the way they defend. In Spain, I looked at Sergio Ramos, Bonucci in Italy and sometimes I’ll go on a mad one and watch any South American defenders. Especially Argentinian because I love the way they defend, Cristian Romero.”

Spurs Web Opinion

With regards to learning the art, Quansah does not need to look too far beyond his own teammate Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch centre-back is an encyclopaedia of defending and is the best person that the 20-year-old can learn from.

Quansah’s performance so far have defied his age and it is very clear that the extra effort he is putting behind the scenes is paying off big time for Liverpool.

The fact that Cristian Romero features in a list that has veterans like Bonucci and Ramos shows how special a player the Tottenham vice-captain is and we can be proud about having him in our ranks.

The Daily Mirror have claimed that Liverpool are not expected to make a move for rumoured Tottenham target Kalvin Phillips in January despite showing an interest in the Manchester City star last summer.

Over the last few weeks, there has been plenty of speculation linking Phillips with a move to Spurs, with the midfielder thought to be keen to leave Man City in search of regular game time.

This includes an update from Football Transfers last month, which suggested the Lilywhites are ‘really keen’ on winning the race for the 27-year-old.

It has been subsequently suggested that Tottenham could face competition from the likes of Bayern Munich (90 min), Newcastle (TEAMtalk) and Juventus (Gazzetta via Sport Witness) for the England international, with The Sun even stating a few days ago that the Bianconeri are confident of winning the race for the player.

Anfield had also been mooted as a potential destination for Phillips, and Pep Guardiola insisted over the weekend that he would not stop any of his players from joining their title rivals, seemingly giving the green light for the Reds to make an approach for the midfielder (talkSPORT).

Liverpool are not in the race with Spurs for Phillips

The Mirror have now stated that Liverpool did show a keen interest in the former Leeds United star during the summer transfer window before turning their attention to other targets.

However, the outlet alleges that Jurgen Klopp’s men are not expected to reignite their interest in Phillips in January. This is because Liverpool are not thought to be prioritising additions in the middle of the park during the upcoming transfer window.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Phillips’ priority is to get game time ahead of next summer’s European championship, I doubt if he would be keen on a move to Spurs as he would not be guaranteed regular starts at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. I suspect the 27-year-old might be leaning towards a switch to Newcastle.

Tottenham Hotspur have a lot of work to do after the international break, and will be looking to bounce back from two defeats. So, here are the games they’ve got lined up, and a look at their rivals’ schedules, too.

The ten-game unbeaten run in the league for Ange Postecoglou came crashing to an end in dramatic style against Chelsea last week. Two red cards, big injuries, and numerous VAR calls ended up in a 4-1 win for the Blues.

With suspensions and injuries to deal with, Spurs fielded a weakened team against Wolves at the weekend and paid the price. Despite leading for much of the game, the Lilywhites capitulated in the final moments and fell to a 2-1 defeat at Molineux.

Tottenham have some time to regroup now, with the international break leaving us without domestic action for the next ten days. Here’s what is on the agenda for Spurs and their rivals when the Premier League resumes.

Spurs Web Opinion

A really tricky run of games for us which could not have come at a worse time, so this will be a real test of our squad. The only consolation is City and Arsenal also have a tough run-in, and Liverpool will be busy with a quick turnaround on a lot of games, too.

Football Insider have revealed that Liverpool have joined Tottenham in the race for Bournemouth star Lloyd Kelly ahead of the January transfer window.

Various outlets over the last few weeks have revealed that Spurs are continuing to keep close tabs on Kelly after failing to get a deal for the centre-back over the line during the summer transfer window (GiveMeSport).

Last week, Fabrizio Romano revealed that AC Milan and Juventus had also entered the race for the race for the 25-year-old’s signature.

However, a couple of days ago, talkSPORT asserted that Bournemouth do not wish to sell Kelly in January even though his current contract at the Vitality Stadium runs out next summer.

It was explained that the Cherries consider the defender to be key in helping them preserve their Premier League status and are thus ready to risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.

Liverpool enter race with Spurs for Lloyd Kelly

Football Insider have now named Liverpool as Spurs’ main competitor for Kelly’s signature in January.

The report states that Jurgen Klopp’s men are keen on signing a versatile defender in the winter and have now identified the Cherries star as a target.

It is alleged that Kelly’s ability to play at centre-back and left-back appeals to the Merseyside club, who are said to be aware that there is ‘huge interest’ in the player across the Premier League.

Spurs Web Opinion

Bournemouth’s preference would be to hang on to Kelly as preserving their top-flight status would be the South Coast club’s priority.

However, the centre-back’s head might be turned by the interest and it remains to be seen if the Cherries would want to keep hold of an unhappy player.

Tottenham Hotspur have a great opportunity to potentially extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table, with both Manchester City and Arsenal having some tough fixtures over the next few weeks.

Spurs have undoubtedly been the surprise package of the season so far, with Ange Postecoglou’s men sitting pretty at the summit of the table after eight Premier League games.

While the most optimistic Tottenham fans do not expect the Lilywhites to stay in that position until the end of the season, they now have a great chance to give themselves some breathing space at the top as they have some fairly winnable fixtures coming up.

Spurs face Fulham, Chelsea and Aston Villa at home over the next few weeks, which they would be expected to win, given their home form and the special atmosphere that has been brewing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season.

They also have two relatively winnable games away at Crystal Palace and Wolves.

Spurs Web Opinion

There are not many easy games in the Premier League and it will be interesting to see how we deal with the pressure of going into the games against the likes of Chelsea and Aston Villa as favourites.  We have a great chance to remain at the top of the table heading into the month of December, which would be a phenomenal achievement.

James Maddison has used the international break to poke fun at his England teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold over the controversy surrounding Tottenham’s recent win over Liverpool, but insists it was all a light-hearted joke.

Spurs have enjoyed an incredible start to the new season, and James Maddison has been at the heart of everything good the side have done so far. The playmaker has five assists and two goals to his name already in the early stages of his Tottenham career (Transfermarkt).

One of those assists came in the recent 2-1 win over Liverpool, when he played in his Spurs captain Heung-min Son in the first half.

Liverpool would equalise not long after, but fell to defeat in the final moments after Pedro Porro drilled in a cross which Joel Matip put into his own net in injury time.

The game was shrouded in controversy as Liverpool had a goal incorrectly disallowed for offside, and also had Diogo Jota sent off for two very soft yellow cards. The issues led Jurgen Klopp to suggest the game should be replayed (Guardian).

Maddison says the idea of a replay is in the past

With Maddison on international duty with the England squad, he took the opportunity to share a little joke on his Instagram. Maddison is pictured talking to Trent Alexander-Arnold, and captioned the post: “Still asking for a replay.”

Now, speaking to talkSPORT, the 26-year-old explained what was really going on: “The conversation wasn’t anything to do with that. Just having a bit of banter with Trent.

“Trent is a good friend of mine, we get on really well. Tongue-in-cheek banter. That game is in the past, we were just having a little mess around.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I was worried for a moment that we might have to replay that game against Liverpool, but the league simply can’t allow it to happen as it would set such a dangerous precedent. Mistakes happen, it’s in the past now as Madders says, and it’s good that he can laugh about it with Trent.

Trent Alexander-Arnold responded to James Maddison’s Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool replay banter in the wake of the Spurs midfielder’s Instagram post.

Maddison took to social media to post on his Instagram story (9/10/23) which featured a photo of the pair on England international duty at St. George’s Park along with the caption ‘Still asking for a replay.’

The two players were involved in the recent Premier League fixture at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium which saw Spurs’ 2-1 win overshadowed by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp‘s suggestion that a replay should take place after the refereeing body, the PGMOL, were forced to apologise to Liverpool after “significant human errors” saw Luis Diaz’s first-half goal incorrectly disallowed for offside.

The refereeing body later released audio of the decision being made which revealed the uncertainty erupting in the VAR room and the panic when it was realised a mistake had been made.

Liverpool ended up losing the game in north London after a last-minute own goal from Joel Matip with Klopp further frustrated by red cards shown to Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota which reduced his side to nine men.

Alexander-Arnold responds to James Maddison’s post

Alexander-Arnold has continued the banter back in the direction of Maddison when he was asked about the post and could not resist aiming a dig at Leicester City’s relegation from the Premier League of which the midfielder was part of, with the Liverpool player scoring a free-kick against the Foxes a fortnight before their fate was sealed.

“Nah,” Alexander-Arnold told Channel 4 when asked whether Maddison’s caption was accurate. “No, he was asking me to teach him how to put a free-kick in the top corner.

“But, I told him, I’d just shown him the video when I scored at Leicester last year and they got relegated.”

SpursWeb Opinion

It is great to see the England pair having banter over the incident, however, it is Maddison who has had the last laugh with Tottenham sitting at the top of the Premier League table and are currently three points ahead of the Merseysiders.

Spurs fans will be hoping that their players who are on international duty come through their fixtures unscathed and continue to hit the ground running when they face Fulham.

There was plenty said and written about VAR’s mistake during Tottenham’s 2-1 win over the Reds, with a miscommunication leading to Luis Diaz’s first-half goal being ruled out for offside.

To many people’s shock, Jurgen Klopp suggested last week that replaying the match would be the fairest solution (Guardian).

This obviously did not sit well with many people in the game, with the Liverpool boss being widely criticised for his statement (Mirror).

Ange Postecoglou said last week that while the specific kind of mistake might have been unique, it was still human error at the end of the day and thus does not meet the threshold for the match to be replayed (Football.London).

Ange Postecoglou has said that the miscommunication between VAR and the on-field referee in the game between Tottenham and Liverpool does not meet the threshold for replaying the match.

The decision to rule out Luis Diaz’s goal for offside was not overturned as the VAR Darren England thought that the goal had been given on the pitch.

When the officials at Stockley Park realised what had happened, the game had already kicked off, meaning that it was too late for them to intervene.

Unsurprisingly, the incident has made a lot of headlines over the last week, with Jurgen Klopp even suggesting that replaying the game would be the fairest possible solution (Guardian).

Multiple sources have since confirmed that the Premier League will not consider replaying the fixture despite Liverpool’s attempt to escalate the issue (Football Insider).

Postecoglou has now pointed out that even though the type of mistake was unprecedented, it was still human error, which is not sufficient ground for the match to be replayed.

Ange Postecoglou responds to Jurgen Klopp quotes

When asked about Klopp’s statement, the Spurs head coach told Football.London: “I think Jurgen’s said that maybe that was taken a little bit out of context.

“My view is when you’re talking about a replay, there’s got to be some sort of threshold and I don’t think a mistake is a threshold for that, irrespective of the consequences.

“If we stray into integrity or misappropriation of the law, then you maybe have a case to say ‘well, you know what, there’s something there’. But, ultimately, when you strip it all back it was a mistake, that’s what it was.

“It was a unique mistake, people have used ‘an unprecedented mistake’ and I agree with that, but it was still a mistake. So if your threshold for replays is mistakes by individuals, that’s 365 games a year, I reckon.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The VAR system is still relatively new in the game and these types of occasional mistakes (it was the first time that this type of miscommunication has occurred) will help fine-tune the system. The communication protocols will certainly improve on the back of this.

ESPN have revealed that the Premier League’s Independent Key Match Incidents Panel have ruled that Diogo Jota should not have been sent off against Tottenham Hotspur last Saturday.

There has been a lot said and written about the miscommunication between VAR and the on-field referee that led to Luis Diaz’s offside not being overruled but that was not the only contentious decision in Spurs’ win over Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp was also not happy with the two red cards that his side got, even stating that Jota got sent off despite not touching any Spurs player for either yellow card incident (90 min).

Panel believe the second yellow card was incorrect

ESPN have now obtained the results of the vote from the Independent Key Match Incident Panel, which has five members, made up of three former players and coaches, plus one representative each from the Premier League and PGMOL.

The panel allegedly believed that the tackle by Jota on Udogie in the 69th minute was not worthy of a second yellow card, with the five members voting 3-2 against a booking.

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that the vote was 3-2 suggests that it was quite a subjective call and clearly not an objective error by referee Simon Hooper. I personally felt that while Jota’s first yellow card was extremely harsh, he clearly deserved a yellow for his second challenge on Udogie.

Tottenham’s recent update about their Women’s Super League Fixture against Liverpool led to some Spurs fans thinking Jurgen Klopp had got his wish of a replay.

Tottenham vs Liverpool will not be replayed

However, some Spurs fans feared the worst when a notification from the club’s app read on Thursday: ‘Our home league clash with Liverpool has been rescheduled.’

The Daily Mail revealed that this led to some Tottenham supporters thinking that the game was indeed about to be replayed, with one supporter commenting ‘I fell off my chair’, while another tweeted ‘heart was in my mouth’ and another ‘that gave me a mild heart attack.’

However, the alert actually referred to a new date for the Women’s Super League fixture between the same two clubs, with the Spurs vs Liverpool WSL game at Leyton Orient’s Brisbane Road on November 12 set to kick off at 12.30 pm.

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that the Tottenham admins knew exactly what they were doing by putting out that notification. In a way, it is quite a nice way to troll Klopp and Liverpool, although it seems like they nearly gave some Spurs fans a heart attack in the process.

Gary Neville has come down hard on Jurgen Klopp after the Liverpool boss called for Liverpool’s clash against Tottenham to be replayed.

At the start of the week, it is fair to say that Liverpool had the sympathy of many neutrals, given the unprecedented nature of the miscommunication between the VAR and the on-field referee, which meant that the decision to rule Luis Diaz offside was not corrected.

However, any goodwill that the Reds had has now disappeared after Klopp quite outrageously claimed on Wednesday that replaying the game would be the only fair outcome (Guardian).

Gary Neville hits out at Jurgen Klopp for replay claim

Neville has now criticised Klopp’s statement, suggesting that the Merseyside club have grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory.

The former Manchester United man also labelled Liverpool’s escalating rhetoric about the refereeing mistake as ‘madness’.

Spurs Web Opinion

The way everyone associated with Liverpool (particularly their supporters) are burning with righteous indignation has been quite revealing.

Wrong decisions have been part of football for a long time, and teams do not always get what they deserve. Not being able to accept that and take the rough with the smooth suggests something is fundamentally wrong with one’s relationship with the sport itself.

Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett has said that Jurgen Klopp wants to move on from the VAR controversy against Tottenham, revealing that the Liverpool boss believes the injustice could galvanise his side.

Earlier this week, the PMGOL released the audio of the incident, which showed that a basic miscommunication between VAR and the on-field referee led to Luis Diaz’s offside not being overturned (Sky Sports).

Just when it seemed like the controversy was set to die down a bit, Klopp poured more fuel into the fire on Wednesday by stating that he believes that replaying the game would be the fair outcome (Guardian).

However, multiple outlets have since explained that the Premier League will not entertain the possibility of replaying the game despite Liverpool’s attempts to escalate the issue (Football Insider).

Is Jurgen Klopp playing games at Liverpool?

Dorsett has now revealed that he spoke to Klopp after the press conference and that the Liverpool boss insisted that the incident will help motivate his side.

The journalist said on Sky Sports Football Daily: “From Jurgen Klopp’s perspective, he wants to try and move on. Of course, he does.

“He’s got a match in the Europa League tomorrow to prepare for, against Royale Union San-Gilloise, and he’s trying to prepare his players for that.

“He told me outside of this news conference room that he thinks this could galvanise his squad and bring them together.”

Klopp clearly knew that a replay was not on the cards and his statement was aimed at putting pressure on the PMGOL and officials. For someone in his position to mention that in his press conference was extremely poor conduct.

However, Football Insider have now claimed that there is no chance of the Premier League calling for the match to be replayed.

The outlet explained even though the Reds are looking to escalate the incident, the Premier League have made it clear that there is no prospect of playing the fixture again.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports Football Daily have revealed that they reached out to Tottenham regarding Klopp’s statement but the North London club did not offer any comment.

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no point in dignifying Klopp’s statement with a response. Liverpool’s conduct has been extremely poor over the last few days.

From their assertion that ‘sporting integrity has been undermined’ to Klopp’s claim yesterday, it is almost as if they are hinting at corruption or foul play when it was evidently just human error.
