Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier is now giving serious consideration to the prospect of returning to Sporting Lisbon, according to talkSPORT,

If Dier had any faint hopes of potentially turning his Tottenham career around, that seemingly ended against Aston Villa last week when Ange Postecoglou decided to leave the 29-year-old, who was his only fit senior centre-back, on the bench and start Emerson Royal instead.

The only question now appears to be whether the England international would leave in the upcoming transfer window, or see out his contract until next summer.

The Daily Mirror reported last month that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy plans to command a fee for the centre-back in January, with Sporting Lisbon and Roma said to be exploring moves for the player.

Dier was not part of Postecoglou’s squad for Sunday’s 3-3 draw at Manchester City after the boss revealed the England international picked up an injury in training ahead of the trip to the Premier League champions.

Dier considering Sporting return

If talkSPORT’s latest update is to be believed, Dier is now ‘seriously considering’ returning to the Portuguese club where he began his career before making the move to Tottenham in 2014.

The outlet does not say whether the centre-back wants to make the switch to Lisbon in January or next summer but it is pointed out that the Spurs star would be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from next month.

The publication also reveals that Tottenham offered Dier to various Premier League clubs in the summer, however ,the defender’s preference was to move abroad.

Spurs Web Opinion

I suspect Dier intends to run out his contract and leave on a free transfer next summer as he would then have a lot more clubs to choose from and would be able to land a big pay package.

However, if Postecoglou continues to decide against picking him over the next few weeks, perhaps the 29-year-old would get fed up by his lack of game time and be open to the opportunities that open up in January.

Ange Postecoglou revealed ahead of Tottenham’s 3-3 draw with Manchester City that Eric Dier had pulled up with an injury.

Many were caught by surprise when Postecoglou chose to name a centre-back pairing of Emerson Royal and Ben Davies against Aston Villa last week.

Some might have expected Dier to come back into the team against the Premier League champions on Sunday to cope with the physical presence of Erling Haaland.

However, Postecoglou stuck with the pairing of Emerson and Davies, and while the Brazilian did have some shaky moments in the first half, the pair grew into the game and finished strongly as Spurs emerged with a hard-fought 3-3 draw.

Eric Dier has a slight injury problem at Tottenham

Dier did not even make the bench for the clash but Postecoglou clarified ahead of the game that it was because the England international had pulled up sore in training.

The Australian told Football.London: “Eric pulled up sore after training and wasn’t available. He’s not available for today.”

With Cristian Romero now set to return from his suspension, some might wonder if Dier has already played his last game for Spurs, with the 29-year-old being heavily linked with a move away from Tottenham in January (talkSPORT).

Spurs Web Opinion

With Emerson and Davies preferred to Dier at centre-back, the Englishman will know that he faces potentially warming the bench for the rest of the season.

That may perhaps convince him to seriously consider the opportunities that come his way in January rather than waiting until his contract runs out in the summer.

According to a report in Gazzetta dello Sport (as relayed by Forza Roma), AS Roma are looking to sign two centre-backs in January, with Eric Dier being one of four Premier League defenders on the club’s radar.

If Dier had any lingering hope of potentially turning around his Tottenham career, that seemingly ended on Sunday when Ange Postecoglou left the 29-year-old on the bench even though he was without his two starting centre-backs.

The Australian explained after the game that he felt Emerson Royal would be better equipped to deal with the directness of Villa’s forwards than the England international (Football.London).

Some reports from Italy over recent weeks have stated that the Dier is Jose Mourinho’s number-one target and that the former Spurs head coach has even reached out to the Englishman regarding a switch to the Stadio Olimpico (TMW).

Roma have Eric Dier on a five-man transfer shortlist

Gazzetta have now explained that given Chris Smelling’s injury problems and the fact that Evan Ndicka will not be available during the African Cup of Nations in January, the Giallorossi wish to sign two centre-backs in January.

The publication states that Dier is one of five names on the Serie A side’s shortlist, alongside Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior, RB Salzburg’s Oumar Solet and Chelsea duo, Trevor Chalobah and Malang Sarr.

The report adds that Roma have some issues in meeting the financial fair play requirements, which is why they would prefer loan deals with an option to buy.

Spurs Web Opinion

A loan deal is obviously not a possibility for Dier since his contract with Tottenham runs out next summer. I fully expect the centre-back to see out the remainder of his contract and leave as a free agent next summer.

Eric Dier has praised Ryan Sessegnon for the hard work that he is putting in behind the scenes to return to action as soon as possible.

Injuries have prevented Sessegnon from fulfilling his potential at Tottenham, with the youngster having a number of spells on the sidelines since making the switch to the club back in 2019.

The 23-year-old might have been hoping to impress Ange Postecoglou in pre-season but his hopes were dashed when he picked up another hamstring injury at the start of July and subsequently had to undergo surgery.

Postecoglou told Football London last month that the former Fulham man has been working extremely hard in the gym, admitting that the last few months have been ‘tough’ for the left-back.

Ryan Sessegnon is working hard behind the scenes

No time frame has been given by the club for Sessegnon’s return but with the whole host of injuries that Spurs are dealing at the moment, Postecoglou could certainly do with more bodies, with the Australian being forced to name two goalkeepers on the bench against Aston Villa.

Dier has now praised Sessegnon on his Instagram stories, with his caption reading: “Always working hard in silence”.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if Sessegnon recovers over the coming weeks, he is not likely to get a start unless there are injuries to both Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies. The 23-year-old might have already played his final game for Spurs as I would not be surprised if the club offloaded him in January.

The Daily Mail have revealed that Ange Postecoglou has been straight-forward with Eric Dier about where he is in the pecking order, with the centre-back said to be appreciative of the clarity.

Among the many surprises in Postecoglou’s starting eleven for the clash against Aston Villa, perhaps the biggest was that Dier was left on the bench, with Emerson Royal starting at centre-back alongside Ben Davies.

When asked why he left the 29-year-old out, the Tottenham head coach explained after the game that he felt Emerson would be able to cope better with the direct nature of the Villa forwards and insisted that he felt his backline did well despite his side’s 2-1 loss (Football.London).

Postecoglou has at least been honest with Eric Dier

The Mail now explained that right from day one, Postecoglou has been honest with Dier about where he features in his plans – something that the experienced defender is quite thankful for.

The report adds that the England international ‘has not been a moment’s trouble behind the scenes’ and has remained professional despite his peripheral role.

The outlet adds that following Postecoglou’s selection decision against Villa, it is now increasingly clear that Dier does not have a future at Spurs under the Australian.

However, the publication adds that with the centre-back’s contract expiring next summer, there are ‘no guarantees’ that he would be open to leaving in January.

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that Postecoglou left Dier out of the side despite the fact that Romero was suspended and Van de Ven was injured, is evidence that there is no way back for the Englishman.

The same can be said of Hojbjerg, who did not make the eleven even though Bissouma, Sarr and Maddison were not available.

Journalist Paul Brown has said that it would have come as a shock to Eric Dier to learn that he was left out of the starting eleven against Aston Villa, suggesting that the centre-back’s days at Tottenham now look numbered.

With Cristian Romero suspended and with Micky van de Ven out with a hamstring injury, Dier might have seen this as an ideal opportunity to prove his worth to Ange Postecoglou.

However, the Australian decided to leave the 29-year-old out, who was his only fit natural centre-back, on the bench on Sunday, opting to start Emerson Royal with Ben Davies in the heart of his defence.

When asked after the game why he made the decision, Postecoglou explained that he felt the Brazilian would be able to cope better with Villa’s direct forwards, adding that he was pleased with how his defenders performed (Football.London).

Eric Dier would have been baffled at being dropped

Brown believes that even though Dier is driven to prove himself, Sunday’s selection decision might be the final nail in the coffin for his Spurs career.

The journalist told GiveMeSportI’m pretty sure Eric Dier will have been baffled by that decision and not terribly happy. It’s looking difficult for him to earn the trust of the manager in that position.

“It might be that Postecoglou wants to rotate there without his top two depending on who the opposition are but I don’t think it’s a good look for Dier not to be getting in for a game like that.

“I know for a fact he’s still an ambitious player he still has a lot of drive and he knows he can do a job in the Premier League, so I think if he continues to be on the fringes when Spurs don’t have their two first choice centre backs available, it’s only a matter of time before he leaves.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Postecogolou evidently did not like what he saw from Dier against Wolves and made the bold call to drop him against Villa.

It will be interesting to see if the 58-year-old brings the England international back into the starting eleven against Man City to cope with the physical threat of Erling Haaland.

Ange Postecoglou has suggested that he felt that Emerson Royal would be better equipped to handle the directness of Aston Villa’s forwards than Eric Dier.

There were a number of surprises in Postecoglou’s starting eleven on Sunday, including his decision to play Giovani Lo Celso and Rodrigo Bentancur in the middle of the park with Dejan Kulusevski as the eight/ten, and his decision to hand Bryan Gil his first Spurs start since January.

However, perhaps the one that was the most eye-catching was his choice to omit Dier from the starting eleven despite the absence of the injured Micky van de Ven and suspended Cristian Romero.

That meant that Tottenham lined up with four natural full-backs across their back four, with Emerson partnering Ben Davies at centre-back.

As a result, the home side did look defensively suspect while defending crosses at times but Postecoglou insisted that he thought his backline coped reasonably well with Villa’s threat.

Postecoglou dropped Eric Dier for better balance

When asked why he left out Dier, the Australian told Football. London: “Just looking for some balance in there.

“Obviously with Watkins and Diaby in there, both very good players and direct in the way they play, I thought we could handle it fairly well.

“I thought we did for the most part, obviously they got through for the second goal and that was disappointing.

“I just thought the way we set up today was to try to be dominant in the game in terms of playing through what we knew was going to be an aggressive line they had and I thought we did that well.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I thought Emerson did well defending one vs one and his positioning was generally quite good, even though he was playing out of position.

However, I think Postecoglou will have no choice but to bring Dier back into the team for the clash against Man City to cope with the physical presence of Erling Haaland.

AS Roma Live have claimed that the Giallorossi expect Tottenham Hotspur to offload Eric Dier in January.

It has been widely reported over the last couple of weeks that Dier, whose contract at Tottenham runs out next summer, is of interest to Roma and Sporting Lisbon in January (Mirror).

In fact, some reports from Italy over recent weeks have stated that the Tottenham man is Jose Mourinho’s number-one target and that the former Spurs head coach has even reached out to the Englishman regarding a switch to the Stadio Olimpico (TMW).

However, Calciomercato suggested last week that Roma are being met with ‘resistance’ from Spurs in their pursuit of Dier following Micky van de Ven’s injury, and have thus been forced to consider other alternatives.

Roma expect Eric Dier to leave Spurs in January

AS Roma Live have now contradicted that claim, stating that the Italian club are of the belief that the centre-back staying at Tottenham beyond January is ‘rather difficult’.

They back up what we have heard from other sources by stating that of the various profiles that the club have reviewed, the Tottenham man is ‘at the top’ of Mourinho’s wishlist.

That is why the Serie A giants are ‘ready to take him’ when the transfer window reopens.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Dier’s preference appears to be to leave on a free transfer next summer, I do feel he might be tempted to take any good opportunity that opens up in January. A switch to Roma could appeal to the 29-year-old, who has the attributes to be successful in the Italian top flight.

Dean Jones has backed Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier to have a Harry Maguire-esque turnaround to his Spurs career.

Dier, who had been a prominent figure for the club in previous seasons found himself sidelined for much of the initial parts of the season. The suspension of Cristian Romero and injury to Micky van de Ven has opened up a door though.

The 29-year-old Englishman had a good showing against Chelsea and started the next game against Wolves. He is surely in line for a start when Spurs take Aston Villa on this weekend.

Dier joined Spurs from Sporting way back in 2014. Initially a defensive midfielder, it was Jose Mourinho during his time at Spurs who helped transition the Englishman into a centre-back.

According to a recent report from O Jogo (via Sport Witness), Sporting CP are ‘studying’ the possibility of snapping up Dier on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign. A return to his former club could be enticing for the player.

Can Eric Dier turn things around at Tottenham?

After being much ridiculed during his time in Manchester, Harry Maguire is having a renaissance of sorts this season. He has featured 11 times for the club under Erik ten Hag and managed to solidify the backline.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, here is what Dean Jones had to say about Eric Dier and how he could take inspiration from his English counterpart Harry Maguire.

“I can see Eric Dier having a Harry Maguire turnaround if he wants it. I don’t think it’s beyond reason that it can happen this season.

“I don’t think he has got a long-term future at Tottenham but, for the sake of this season, Eric Dier can win people over enough to show that he can at least help them through moments of this season.”

“Although Dier is not going to be a first-choice player and is not going to be good enough to be part of Tottenham’s starting XI because of the new expectations and levels that they are striving towards, I think it’s important that you do have somebody like Dier because of the mentality he has got. He has got a very strong sense of worth.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Dier may find himself featuring more this season but it seems highly unlikely that he will have a future here at the club. The Englishman is just not good enough to be a part of our starting XI.

A return to Sporting might mean ‘financial sacrifices’ but the emotional appeal should help him make this decision. For the sake of this season though, let’s hope Dier can keep up a high level and help us when we don’t have Romero or Van de Ven available.

Sporting Lisbon are currently looking into the possibility of signing Eric Dier on a free transfer at the end of the season after the Spurs man hinted he would be open to a return to the club.

Eric Dier joined Tottenham from Sporting back in 2014, and has been a regular starter under every manager who has been and gone during his time at the club.

However, as the 29-year-old now approaches his tenth year with Spurs, he has seen his opportunities limited by new manager, Ange Postecoglou.

Dier was absent from the first five matchday squads in the Postecoglou era. He only made his first appearance of the season during the defeat to Chelsea when Micky van de Ven picked up an injury and Cristian Romero was sent off.

It has long been suggested Dier will move on, given the fact his current contract expires next summer.

Sporting Lisbon want an Eric Dier reunion

Dier himself has spoken of a potential return to Sporting one day (SAPO). Now, the Portuguese side are hoping to take steps towards making that happen.

That’s according to a report from O Jogo (via Sport Witness), who claim that Sporting are currently “studying” the possibility of snapping up Dier on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign.

While Dier’s comments have been “taken into account” by Sporting, the stumbling block lies with his salary. Apparently, Sporting can only push ahead with an approach if Dier agrees to decrease his wages below €2m (£1.75m) a year.

Spurs Web Opinion

That wage drop would be pretty significant for Dier, taking him to roughly £33k a week. I would imagine he can get more than that from an English club, or possibly in Italy. However, the nostalgic appeal of returning to Sporting might be enough to seal the deal.

It has been widely reported over the last couple of weeks that Dier, whose contract at Tottenham runs out next summer, is of interest to Roma and Sporting Lisbon in January (Mirror).

In fact, some reports from Italy over recent weeks have stated that the Tottenham man is Jose Mourinho’s number-one target and that the Portuguese coach has even reached out to the Englishman regarding a switch to the Stadio Olimpico (TMW).

However, Football Insider explained a few days ago that following the injury to Micky van de Ven, Ange Postecoglou would only greenlight Dier’s departure after another centre-back arrives through the door in January.

Roma face a roadblock in attempts to land Eric Dier

CalcioMercato have now stated that Roma have been met with some ‘resistance’ from Tottenham following the injury to Van de Ven, with the Premier League side no longer as keen on doing business.

The outlet alleges that due to Spurs’ hesitation in sanctioning Dier’s exit, the Giallorossi have now identified Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior as an alternative.

Spurs Web Opinion

There will likely be a few more twists and turns in the Dier sage ahead of January, with plenty of other clubs likely to enter the race for the centre-back’s signature.

Ultimately, Tottenham’s decision on whether or not to keep the 29-year-old until the end of the season might depend on his performances over the next few weeks.

Calicomercato.it claim that Juventus now have Tottenham defender Eric Dier in their sights.

Two weeks ago, The Daily Mirror reported that Daniel Levy plans to command a fee for Dier in January rather than letting him run his contract down and depart as a free agent next summer.

The outlet suggested that Sporting Lisbon and AS Roma had both expressed an interest in the 29-year-old’s services in January.

A few days ago, Football Insider reported that Bayern Munich were also eyeing a move for Dier, with the Tottenham man alleged to be open to reuniting with Harry Kane at Bavaria.

Juventus enter the race for Tottenham’s Eric Dier

Calciomercato.it have now stated that Roma are not the only Italian side after the centre-back, with Juve ready to challenge Jose Mourinho’s men for the England international.

The report asserts that Dier would be the ‘perfect’ profile for Bianconeri, given his versatility and experience, with Massimiliano Allegri in need of cover both in defence and midfield.

However, the publication makes it clear that Juve view the Spurs star as a target for next summer rather than January.

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe that Dier would prefer to leave as a free agent next summer, particularly given that he is likely to get plenty of game time over the coming weeks after Van de Ven’s injury.

There is no doubt that many clubs around Europe would be interested in singing a player of the 29-year-old’s experience on a free transfer.

Eric Dier remains a target for Jose Mourinho at AS Roma, and the Italian outfit could bag the Tottenham Hotspur man for between €4m-€5m (£3.5m-£4.3m) in the January transfer window.

Now heading into his tenth year with Tottenham, Eric Dier may well be approaching the end of his time in North London.

Despite being a regular starter under Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, and Antonio Conte, the 29-year-old has fallen out of favour since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou.

The England international was left out of the first four matchday squads this season, and didn’t make it onto the field until the game against Chelsea last week.

Dier’s current contract comes to an end in the summer of 2024, which leaves his future up in the air. Whether he leaves in January, or remains with Tottenham until the end of the season is unclear, but it seems he may well be on his way at some point in the near future.

Roma eye cut-price deal for Eric Dier

According to Romagiallorossa, Dier is at the top of Roma’s list for the upcoming transfer window as Mourinho looks for defensive reinforcements. Apparently, the Portuguese coach has “specifically requested” the transfer of Dier.

The Italian outfit wanted Dier in the summer, but a deal stalled due to Tottenham’s “high demands” at the time.

Now, it is thought an offer at a “maximum of €4-5m” would be enough to secure a deal for Dier in January. With his contract coming to an end, it is believed this would still be a “decent capital gain” for Spurs.

Spurs Web Opinion

I can definitely see this deal happening. Dier has spoken of his desire to move abroad, he needs to play first-team football, and would probably like to reunite with Mourinho. The only issue now is waiting on Spurs to sign a replacement, which hopefully we will do ASAP.

Alan Hutton believes that Eric Dier could do well at Bayern Munich, given the amount of possession the Bundesliga giants tend to have on a regular basis.

Dier undoubtedly has an important job to do for Tottenham over the coming weeks, with Micky van de Ven out with a hamstring injury and Cristian Romero serving a suspension following his red card against Chelsea.

However, whatever happens over the next month and a half, it is clear that this is going to be the centre-back’s final season at Tottenham, with the only question being whether he will leave in January or wait until next summer when he is a free agent.

The Daily Mirror reported last week that Daniel Levy plans to command a fee for Dier in January, and Football Insider subsequently reported a couple of days ago that the centre-back is open to leaving N17 after Bayern expressed an interest.

Should Eric Dier move to Bayern Munich?

Hutton believes that the move would suit all parties, insisting that the time has come for the England international to have a fresh star.

When asked about Bayern’s interest in Dier, the former Spurs right-back told Football Insider: “If I’m totally honest, I think Tottenham will want to bring someone else in. “With van de Ven and Romero there, who have you got there that’s going to come in?

“There’s a lot of players that have been there for a number of years now and it’s not quite worked out. Dier’s been there for nine years now and you would think his Tottenham career is now over considering the last few weeks.

“Would he fancy it? Probably. You’re going to a team there where you’re probably going to win more often than not.

“He’d have a lot of the ball, he’s good with his feet and he can play out from the back so it’s probably something that he’ll think about. Ultimately I think it’s time for him to move on to something different. Obviously, Ange Postecoglou will want to bring in his own signings.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I would be surprised if the Bayern rumours have any legs. While there is no doubt that a number of clubs would show interest in Dier in January, I suspect the centre-back will see out the rest of his contract and leave next summer.

Harry Kane has named Eric Dier as the player he would not want to sit next to during a long flight, revealing that the Tottenham defender falls asleep anywhere and everywhere.

Kane might have departed Tottenham in the summer but he has still got some great friends at the club, not least Dier, who he has played alongside for club and country for nine years.

It has been well documented that the striker and the centre-back are close friends, with the duo, along with Matt Doherty, even forming a mini movie club during away trips when the Wolves man was at the North London club (The Athletic).

Eric Dier is not a good travel companion, says Kane

However, the Bayern Munich star has admitted that the 29-year-old is not great company during long trips as he is a heavy sleeper.

When asked which teammate he would not want to sit next to during a long-haul flight, Kane told ESPN: “I’m going to put Eric Dier in there, he just sleeps anywhere, no conversation from him, he’d probably sleep the whole 12 hours or however long the flight is, so, sorry Eric, I need more from you.”

Interestingly, the possibility of Kane reuniting with Dier has been raised recently, with Football Insider reporting earlier this week that the defender has emerged as a shock target for Bayern Munich.

The outlet suggested that Thomas Tuchel values the Tottenham star’s versatility and that the centre-back is open to a switch to Bavaria.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if Kane gives glowing reviews of Dier to Tuchel, I would be extremely surprised if Bayern made a move for the Spurs star. I also do not think the 29-year-old would be too keen on warming the bench at the Allianz Arena.

CalcioMercato have stated that AS Roma fear a move for Eric Dier might not prove straightforward, which is why the Serie A side have identified alternatives to the Tottenham man.

There continues to be a lot of speculation over Dier’s future, which is unsurprising considering that the centre-back’s contract runs out next summer (Transfermarkt).

Last week, The Mirror reported that even though the 29-year-old prefers to leave on a free transfer next summer, Daniel Levy hopes to command a fee for him in January, with some clubs showing interest in the defender’s services.

One of those clubs is thought to be AS Roma, with multiple reports from Italy suggesting over the last couple of weeks that Dier is Jose Mourinho’s top target (TuttoMercatoWeb).

Deal could be complicated for Eric Dier to Roma

The same claim has been reported by Calciomercato, with the outlet stating that Dier’s profile is the one most favoured by Mourinho, owing to the England international’s ‘experience and quality’.

However, the report goes on to explain that the Tottenham man is now expected to get minutes at Tottenham after the injury to Micky van de Ven, and that Sporting Lisbon and Bayern Munich also circling over him ahead of January.

It is asserted that these developments ‘risk complicating’ the Giallorossi’s pursuit of Dier, which is why the Serie A side have identified Genoa’s Radu Dragusin and Red Bull Salzburg’s Oumar Solet as alternatives.

Spurs Web Opinion

I think the main complication for Roma and the other interested suitors in January is that Dier would prefer to leave as a free agent next summer. It is understandable why the 29-year-old would want that as he would have a whole host of options to choose from next summer.

So, while the likes of Roma and Sporting would perhaps be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with Dier in January, they would likely have to look elsewhere if they want a centre-back to come through the door mid-season.

Eric Dier has refused to rule out the prospect of Tottenham Hotspur challenging the likes of Manchester City for the Premier League title this season.

A little over a week ago, several pundits were questioning whether Spurs need to be taken seriously as potential title contenders after the Lilywhites had won eight and drawn two of their first 10 Premier League matches (Sky Sports).

However, the picture now looks completely different after two back-to-back losses to Chelsea and Wolves, with Tottenham’s lack of squad depth being exposed at Molineux.

Many of them changed their tune after the last two results, with Tony Cascarino even claiming a couple of days ago that he expects Aston Villa to qualify for the Champions League ahead of the Lilywhites (The Game Podcast).

Eric Dier is keeping a cool head at Tottenham

Dier, who has been part of two title-challenging sides under Mauricio Pochettino, is not one to get carried away, with the England international pointing out that there is still a lot of football to be played this season.

When asked about a title challenge, the centre-back said at a Web Summit in Lisbon (via The Mirror): “We’re still at the start of the season, there is still a long way to go. I am experienced enough to know anything is possible.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Right from the start of the season, Postecoglou and the Tottenham players have been careful not to spell out any particular objective for the season, which is arguably a deliberate strategy.

That ensures that they do not put themselves under any unnecessary pressure while also not putting a limit on their ambitions.

Football Insider have claimed that Eric Dier is now ‘seriously interested’ in quitting Tottenham Hotspur in January after Bayern Munich entered the race for his signature.

It has been widely reported over the last month that Dier wishes to run his contract down and leave Spurs as a free agent next summer so that he has more options to choose from regarding his next destination (Alasdair Gold – Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham).

However, The Daily Mirror claimed last week that Daniel Levy would look to command a fee for the 29-year-old in January rather than letting him run his contract down.

The outlet added that the likes of Sporting Lisbon and AS Roma have shown an interest in making a move for the experienced defender mid-season.

It then emerged a few days ago that Bayern are also exploring a move for Dier in January, with the Tottenham man’s versatility said to appeal to Thomas Tuchel (Football Insider).

Dier is now tempted to join Kane at Bayern Munich

If Football Insider’s latest update is to be believed, the Spurs star has now changed his stance after hearing of Bayern’s interest.

It is asserted that Dier would be interested in swapping the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the Allianz Arena in January and reuniting with Harry Kane at Bavaria.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am quite sceptical about this report as Dier will know that he will likely be the fourth-choice centre-back at Bayern. His chances of game time at the Bundesliga club are even lower than it at Spurs.

The 29-year-old would probably want to join a club where he would be an automatic starter, given that he is theoretically in the peak years of his career.

Football Insider have claimed that following the injury to Micky van de Ven, Ange Postecoglou has decided that he would only give the green light for Eric Dier to be sold after another centre-back arrives through the door in January.

While Van de Ven reportedly does not require surgery on his hamstring tear, the Dutchman is still expected to be out of action until January (The Telegraph).

That means that Postecoglou would have to rely on Dier, who is the only other senior centre-back at his disposal if the Australian does not want to turn to the Under-21 players.

There has been plenty of speculation over the England international’s future recently, with The Mirror reporting last week that Daniel Levy would look to get a fee for the 29-year-old in January rather than allowing him to run his contract down and leave as a free agent next summer.

The outlet added that the likes of AS Roma and Sporting Lisbon are ready to make a move for the experienced defender when the transfer window opens mid-season.

Van de Ven injury may force Spurs to sign defender

However, if Football Insider’s latest update is to be believed, there has been a change of plan at Spurs after Van de Ven picked up an injury.

It is explained that while the Lilywhites are still willing to sell Dier in January, they first want to bring a defender through the door before allowing him to leave.

This is because Posteocoglou does not want to leave himself short of options even for a brief period in case there is another injury to one of his starting centre-backs.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if Van de Ven had not picked up an injury, I do not think Tottenham would have allowed Dier to leave without signing another centre-back.

In fact, Spurs arguably need to sign two central defenders if the England international leaves in January, unless Ange feels that one of Alfie Dorrington or Ashley Phillips is ready to step in if required.

Jamie O’Hara thinks Ange Postecoglou should have trusted some of the youngsters to play against Wolves rather than starting with Eric Dier and Ben Davies.

With Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie suspended for the trip to Molineux Stadium and with Micky van de Ven out with a hamstring injury, Postecoglou was forced to revamp his backline.

The Australian started with an experienced pairing of Dier and Davies in central defence while Emerson Royal deputised at left-back.

Tottenham’s performance left a lot to be desired, with Wolves deservedly picking up all three points, owing to late strikes by Pablo Sarabia and Mario Lemina.

Postecoglou acknowledged after the game that his players could have been more aggressive in possession but insisted that he was happy with the commitment and effort they showed on the pitch (Football.London).

Should Spurs trust the likes of Phillips and Donley?

O’Hara has suggested that a loss on Saturday would have been more digestible for Spurs fans had the Tottenham boss started with some youngsters over the likes of Dier and Davies.

The pundit told talkSPORT (13 November, 11 am): “Ben Davies, I like him. He’s a good lad. He can do a job. Eric Dier… But the fans, they want to move on from that era of players. So, when we pick up injuries, these players you’re trying to get rid of have to play again.

“The manager has to take a stance. (Postecoglou should say) ‘If I lose a couple of players, I need to try something more new’. Try out a couple of lads from the Under-23s. If you go back to the same players, Dier and Davies, you get the same result.

“I would rather lose against Wolves with some U23 player, and saying ‘you know what, he’s half decent’ (Postecoglou) went safe. He played Hojbjerg, Dier and Davies.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Most of the fans calling for Ashley Phillips or Alfie Dorrington to get a game have not seen them play a full 90 minutes of football. Ange and his coaching staff watch these youngsters train on a regular basis and I trust their judgement on whether they are ready to start.
