Here’s how we rated the Spurs players following the opening forty-five minutes of action in this afternoon’s Premier League clash against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium

Ange Postecoglou’s side head into the break currently 2-1 behind after the North Londoners had earlier taken the lead through Heung-min Son.

Guglielmo Vicario: City have been trying to put the Italian under pressure from their countless corner kicks, could do little for either goal. 6.

Pedro Porro: Has done well in dealing with the threat of Doku down the right.  At times you have to sympathise with the Spaniard’s positioning. 7.

Emerson Royal: Gifted City the ball in a dangerous area and uncharacteristically Haaland pulled his shot wide.  Struggling in the centre half role. 6.

Emerson Royal

Ben Davies: Got turned inside out by Doku, thankfully the shot came back off the bar. Decided to drop deeper when the rest of the Spurs defence kept their line on the edge of the box for Foden’s goal. 5.

Destiny Udogie: A rash challenge on Foden saw him pick up his fourth booking of the season. 5.

Yves Bissouma: Recalled following his one-match ban.  Lost the ball in his own half just after the half hour mark which should have seen Haaland add a third. 5.

Giovani Lo Celso: Needs to do far more to help out the rest of his midfield. 5.

Bryan Gil: Did brilliantly well to set the counter attack away for Son’s opener.  Should have looked to have released the captain just prior to the haf hour mark with an earlier pass that could have created a good chance on goal. 6.

Dejan Kulusevski: Has done really well in his central role and has given Rodri problems. 7.

Heung-min Son: A brilliant run from the South Korean saw him outmuscle Doku and finish neatly beyond Ederson.  Scored at both ends inside ten minutes when City’s cross came off his thigh. 6.

Brennan Johnson: His pace is a threat to the City defence, however, with Spurs having their backs to the wall it just hasn’t been an option. 6.

Ange Postecoglou has named his Tottenham Hotspur side which will take to the field in this afternoon’s Premier League clash against Manchester City.

Tottenham make the trip to the home of the current champions in far-from-ideal circumstances with a number of key players unavailable for selection after a horrible spell of injuries has left the Australian unable to call upon Rodrigo Bentancur, Micky van de Ven, Pape Matar Sarr, James Maddison, Ivan Perisic, Manor Solomon and Ryan Sessegnon among others, while Cristian Romero is still unable to take his place in defence due to suspension.

Yves Bissouma is available for selection after serving his one-match ban against Aston Villa after picking up five Premier League bookings this season.

Tottenham have lost their last three Premier League matches, having been unbeaten in their previous 11 and face a City side who have lost just two of their past 13 top flight home matches against the North Londoners.

Tottenham team news vs Manchester City

Spurs’ record of eight wins, two draws and three defeats is the same as they had after 13 Premier League matches of last season under Antonio Conte. They lost 2-1 at home against Liverpool in their 14th league fixture.

Last season, Spurs had to rely on the brilliance of Harry Kane to take all three points last season following a 3-2 win in one of the greatest individual performances in Premier League history, however, with the striker now at Bayern Munich, the fans will be looking to the likes of Heung-min Son to prove to be the thorn in City’s side.

This is who takes to the field at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon:

Man City XI: Ederson, Rúben Dias, Gvardiol, Walker(c), Álvarez, Akanji, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Foden, Haaland, Doku

Subs: Bobb, Lewis, Phillips, Grealish, Aké, Ortega, Gómez, Stones, Kovacic

Spurs: Vicario, Porro, Davies, Udogie, Emerson Royal, Lo Celso, Bissouma, Kulusevski, Gil, Johnson, Son(c)

Subs: Højbjerg, Véliz, Skipp, Forster, Austin, Yago Santiago, Dorrington, Donley, Richarlison

Can Spurs avoid defeat at Man City?

Postecoglou’s squad has been decimated by injury with the Australian down to the bare bones when it comes to selection in certain areas with the likes of Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Ivan Perisic, Manor Solomon and Ryan Sessegnon sidelined while Cristian Romero serves the final match of his three-game suspension.

Spurs have defeated Manchester City six times in the Premier League since Pep Guardiola joined the club in 2016 – the most of any team and will certainly be hoping that against all odds, they can come away from the game with something.

Among the players spotted arriving in Manchester were Heung-min Son, Pedro Porro and Giovani Lo Celso.

Tottenham Hotspur take on Manchester City this weekend in the Premier League, and former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp does not fancy their chances against the champions.

The impressive start Spurs made to the 2023/24 campaign has come to a grinding halt, largely due to injuries and suspensions to Ange Postecoglou‘s squad.

A ten-game unbeaten run at the start of the season had Spurs on top of the league, but three straight defeats now have the Lilywhites down to fifth in the table after the loss against Aston Villa last weekend.

With key players such as James Maddison and Micky van de Ven ruled out, and Cristian Romero suspended, the situation does not appear to be about to improve any time soon – at least, not with a visit to Manchester City on the horizon.

Redknapp predicts Man City win over Spurs

City are currently second in the Premier League, three points ahead of Postecoglou’s men. And, Harry Redknapp cannot see his former side getting anything from the Etihad this weekend.

He told BetVictor: “Here we go, the big one! Pep was probably annoyed to not get the win against Liverpool last week, they let that one slip. That was a great comeback from them during the week against Leipzig though, they probably feel unbeatable at home.

“That’s three defeats in a row for Spurs, Ange has to be concerned. The injuries keep mounting up for his side as well, it’s a really difficult spell for them. They’ve still been creating chances though and with the likes of Son and Kulusevski still in the side, they’ll always be a threat.

“I can see Spurs scoring but I can only see a City win. Doku looks like such a threat and with him on one side, Foden on the other, City will be such a hard side to stop.”

Prediction: Man City 3-1 Spurs.

Spurs Web Opinion

Unfortunately, I just cannot see us winning this one. City are a tough side to play at the best of times, never mind when half the squad are out injured. I think it will be fairly comfortable for City this one, I’ll go for a 2-0 home win.

Ange Postecoglou has provided a Tottenham Hotspur team news update ahead of Sunday’s match against Manchester City during this afternoon’s press conference at Hotspur Way.

Tottenham head north to Manchester to take on the Premier League champions looking to avoid a fourth successive Premier League defeat having suffered losses against Chelsea, Wolverhampton Wanderers and most recently Aston Villa.

Postecoglou’s squad has been decimated by injuries and suspensions in recent weeks with Rodrigo Bentancur expected to be out until February after tearing a ligament in his ankle during the match against Villa following a foul by Matty Cash during the first half of the 2-1 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Australian was already without Ivan Perisic, Manor Solomon, Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Ryan Sessegnon, Richarlison and Pape Matar Sarr through injury while Cristian Romero and Yves Bissouma were suspended.

Spurs team news for Manchester City match

Bissouma returns following his one-match ban, however, Romero remains unavailable and will serve the last of his three-match suspension.

Postecoglou told Tottenham’s official X account that Bentancur will be out for a couple of months with his latest injury, while Richarlison should be back in training tomorrow and Pape Matar Sarr will return in the next couple of weeks. The rest of Tottenham’s injured contingent will be more long-term.

On Bentancur, Ange said: “It’s disappointing for him. I kind of saw it on the day and the outcome wasn’t great. He’ll probably miss a fair chunk of time between now and the New Year.

“It’s probably a couple of months for him to get back, which is disappointing for him because we all know and have witnessed how hard he has worked to get back.

“He got back playing for his country, he got his first start and he started awfully well for us. For him personally, everyone is fairly gutted but he is such a positive guy. He can’t wait to get cracking again and I’m in no doubt we will see him back as soon as possible.”

When asked about Richarlison, he added: “Richy is probably the closest of the ones who have been missing and looking to get him involved in training hopefully tomorrow.

“We will see how he is because he’s obviously missed a fair bit.  He’s done his rehab really good and he feels really good, which is important.  He is like the next, sort of cab off the rank in terms of the injured guys.”

On Sarr, he continued: “Pape is probably a little bit behind him [Richarlison], so we will just see how he goes.  I guess out of all of the injured guys, they are the two we are hoping that will be back over the next sort of couple of weeks.  Obviously, the rest of them we won’t see until the New Year.”

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to bounce back from three straight defeats with a visit to Manchester City this weekend, and we’ve all the information you need to stay abreast of the action on Sunday.

The fine progress Spurs had made under Ange Postecoglou in the first ten games of the season has come to something of a halt of late. Understandable, really, given the spate of injuries and suspensions that have hit the squad.

Three consecutive defeats to Chelsea, Wolves, and Aston Villa have seen Spurs drop to fifth in the Premier League table, and the Lilywhites now sit three points behind Pep Guardiola’s side.

City go into the game with three straight wins in the league, and will be buoyed by the stunning comeback against RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

When and where is the Manchester City vs Tottenham game?

The game will be played at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, December 3, 2023, with a 4:30 pm kick-off (GMT). It will be the final game of the weekend in the Premier League.

How to watch the Manchester City vs Tottenham game

Sky Sports customers will be able to watch the game on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League. Coverage will begin at 4:00 pm, straight after the West Ham vs Crystal Palace game.

Manchester City vs Tottenham team news

Spurs are in something of an injury crisis right now, with nine first-team players ruled out as things stand, including key players such as James Maddison and Micky van de Ven.

Pape Matar Sarr could be in line for a return but is still a doubt, while fellow midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur will be missing until February of next year after picking up an ankle injury against Villa. Ivan Perisic, Manor Solomon, Richarlison, Ashley Phillips, and Ryan Sessegnon are all out, too.

Cristian Romero has one more game to serve on his three-game suspension after being sent off against Chelsea at the start of November, but Yves Bissouma will be available for selection again after missing the last game through suspension.

For City, John Stones is ready to return after an injury, but Matheus Nunes and Mateo Kovacic are 50/50 as they battle to recover from their own issues. Kevin De Bruyne is still out injured, too.

Spurs Web Opinion

If we had our full-strength XI, I’d fancy us to get a result here, but with a depleted squad I just can’t see a positive outcome sadly. I’m going to go for a City win, 2-0.

Tottenham Hotspur will travel to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday evening for a huge clash with Premier League champions Manchester City, and we now know what colour kits both sides will be wearing.

After a tremendous start to life under Ange Postecoglou – during which time the Lilywhites went ten games unbeaten and sat at the top of the Premier League table – the wheels have started to come off a little for Spurs.

Tottenham are now on a run of three straight defeats, with the chaotic 4-1 loss against Chelsea at the start of November kicking off a chain reaction of suspensions and injury problems for the squad.

With the likes of James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, and Cristian Romero out of action for one reason or another, Spurs have struggled to recapture that early-season form.

They’ll be looking to bounce back from a disappointing defeat to Aston Villa last weekend, but face the formidable Manchester City this weekend, which is never an easy game.

LUTON, ENGLAND – OCTOBER 07: Micky van de Ven of Tottenham Hotspur celebrates with teammate James Maddison after scoring the team’s first goal during the Premier League match between Luton Town and Tottenham Hotspur at Kenilworth Road on October 07, 2023 in Luton, England. What kit will Spurs wear against Man City?

The Tottenham Hotspur website has now confirmed which kit the team will be wearing for the trip to Manchester, so you can wear the appropriate shirt in support on Sunday.

Spurs will wear their taupe haze third kit, while City will don their traditional sky blue home kit. As for the goalkeepers, City’s stopper will be in green, while Guglielmo Vicario will wear the yellow keeper strip.

The taupe kit brought luck last time it was used in the league, for a 1-0 win against Luton.

Spurs Web Opinion

I know the taupe kit has caused some split opinions among the fanbase, but I love it. Hopefully, it can help us produce a similar result to the last time we wore it – what we would all give for a 1-0 win away at City right now!

Former Premier League referee, Dermot Gallagher, has shed some light on the fact that VAR was not fully functional for the first ten minutes of Tottenham’s recent game against Aston Villa, and insists it wasn’t a serious issue.

Tottenham fell to their third straight defeat on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 reverse against Aston Villa. Spurs had taken the lead through a Giovani Lo Celso goal, but a dominant first-half display was tarnished by a Pau Torres header in the dying moments of the first 45.

Villa completed their comeback in the second half, with Ollie Watkins proving how clinical he can be to round off a finely-worked move.

The result sees Ange Postecoglous men drop to fifth in the Premier League table.

It was a game without much in the way of controversy, in relative to recent weeks in the league. Aside from a handful of disallowed goals for fairly clear offsides, and a dangerous challenge on Rodrigo Bentancur, VAR had little in the way of big decisions.

VAR issues in Tottenham vs Aston Villa explained

In fact, issues with the link between the VAR room and the pitch side monitor at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium almost prevented effective communication entirely, but Dermot Gallagher explained why this wasn’t too much of a problem.

He told Sky Sports: “The VAR was working, the feed was going into Stockley Park, they could see everything. The problem was it wasn’t relaying to the monitor in the ground.

“So if VAR checked an incident, they would’ve had to relay back to the referee what they had seen. The referee couldn’t go to the monitor.

“The referee is there to referee the game. The VAR is a backup. It only lasted ten minutes, but during that time [the game] was at the mercy of VAR, if you like, for any key match incident, rather than going to the screen.

“Everybody knew at the ground, it was relayed to the broadcasters… I could hear that, I could hear the VAR saying to the referee that they had checked and cleared everything.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I don’t think this is too big a deal, as clearly everything was still being checked and communicated. Had an issue been serious enough within that ten-minute period that a monitor was normally required, it would have been very interesting to see what would’ve happened.

Here’s how we rated the Spurs players following the opening forty-five minutes of action in this afternoon’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Ange Postecoglou’s side head into the break currently level at 1-1.

Guglielmo Vicario: Aside from watching Watkins’ header go into his net and later ruled offside, has not been tested until he had to clear the ball deep into injury time. 6.

Pedro Porro: Played a beautiful ball over the top for Udogie’s early chance and followed it up with another soon after to release Johnson down the right. Had a good opportunity to square to Son for what looked to be a tap-in but his pass was intercepted.  Fortunate with an error just before the break. 7.

Emerson Royal: Operating as a central defender ahead of Dier.  Did well to bail out Porro’s loss of possession in injury time. 6.

Ben Davies: Has done well in possession, thankfully Watkins and Diaby have not tested his pace. 6.

Destiny Udogie: Had the first clear chance of the game when he fired over the bar, has tried to get forward whenever possible. 7.

Rodrigo Bentancur: His first start since his ACL injury and has had some nice touches on the ball, his passing has been impressive. Forced off just after the half hour mark as a result of Cash’s disgraceful tackle with what appears to be an ankle problem. 7.

Bryan Gil

Bryan Gil: A first start for the Spaniard since January.  Inches away from providing an assist when he played a beautiful cross which nearly met the head of Son, has provided some natural width to the left. 6.

Giovani Lo Celso: Has looked very tidy on the ball.  Opened the scoring with a thunderous hit which took a deflection off Carlos’ thigh. 7.

Dejan Kulusevski: Will be kicking himself for doing everything right but saw his shot come back off the post, when it looked easier to score.  Was unlucky with a second effort later on in the game. 7.

Heung-min Son: If he were an inch taller, he would have scored from Gil’s cross.  Also saw an effort ruled offside. 6.

Brennan Johnson: Spurs need to use him as more of an outlet, his pace saw him breeze past Digne. 6.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg: Came on as a replacement for Bentancur. 6.

Ange Postecoglou has named his Tottenham Hotspur side which will take to the field in this afternoon’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa.

Tottenham return to action following the international break having suffered back-to-back defeats against Chelsea and Wolves despite opening the scoring in both matches and come up against a Villa side who have had an impressive start to the campaign and sit just a point behind the North Londoners.

Postecoglou revealed in Friday’s pre-match press conference that Destiny Udogie was fit to return to action after missing Italy’s recent Euro Qualifier double header, while Pape Matar Sarr was a doubt heading into the fixture and Ashley Phillips is the latest injury casualty, joining James Maddison and Micky van de Ven on the treatment table.

Spurs team news vs Aston Villa

The Australian told Football.London: “Micky and Madders no real update, same as a few weeks back. We’ve had a couple of issues out of the international break. Young Ash Phillips picked up an ankle injury with the England team and he’s out for a little while. We’re still assessing it but at least probably a month out.

“We’re just checking on Pape Sarr, who has an issue coming back from the international team as well. We’ll see how he is tomorrow as he didn’t train today. Aside from that, Biss is suspended but we get Destiny back and I think everyone else is ok.”

Cristian Romero serves the second of his three-match suspension, while Yves Bissouma sits out the fixture as a result of the yellow card he received at Wolves, his fifth of the season.

This is who takes to the field in North London this afternoon:

Tottenham XI: Vicario, Porro, Royal, Davies, Udogie, Bentancur, Lo Celso, Kulusevski, Bryan, Son, Johnson.

Subs: Forster, Austin, Dorrington, Dier, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Donley, Veliz

Aston Villa XI: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Carlos, Torres, Digne; Luiz, Kamara, McGinn; Diaby, Watkins

The Spurs players and backroom staff including Ange Postecoglou have arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ahead of this afternoon’s match against Aston Villa.

Following the international break, the focus shifts back to the Premier League campaign in what is going to be an intense run of games beyond the Christmas period with Tottenham knowing that they could travel to Manchester City next weekend looking to avoid four defeats in a row if they fail to beat Unai Emery’s side today.

Can Spurs end their losing run against Aston Villa?

Villa are certainly a side to take seriously and their tally of 19 points from eight league matches since the September international break is the highest in the division.  Heading into this weekend they have the opportunity to move above Tottenham with a victory.

The Villains beat Tottenham home and away last season and can win three consecutive Premier League matches against them for only the second time, following a run of four from 1994 to 1996.

Among the players spotted arriving in North London were Heung-min Son, Giovani Lo Celso and Rodrigo Bentancur.

The clubs in the Premier League have voted against the plans to ban teams from loaning players between ownership groups, meaning Newcastle United can take players on loan from PIF-owned clubs, like Ruben Neves for example.

Things have changed a lot in the last 20 years in English football. Since the Roman Abramovich regime at Chelsea, and the Abu Dhabi investment in Manchester City, we have now seen many top clubs taken over by wealthy owners.

Tottenham Hotspur are still holding on to their current ownership under the ENIC group and Daniel Levy‘s stewardship as chairman, though how long that continues remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United were recently taken over by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) and have enjoyed relative success in the early days of that ownership, with a Carabao Cup final and Champions League qualification achieved last season.

Clubs allowed to loan within ownership groups

There has long been a debate about whether clubs whose owners also have a share in other clubs abroad, would be allowed to move players between the two sides. Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, the Premier League clubs have voted against banning such activity.

He wrote: “Premier League clubs have voted against ban on clubs loaning players from within the same ownership group. It means Newcastle can sign players on loan from PIF-owned clubs — and same for other clubs like Crystal Palace with Lyon and similar situations.”

Ruben Neves is one such player who has been strongly linked with a move to Newcastle in January, and the Portuguese midfielder has also been put forward as a target for Spurs (TEAMtalk).

Now, however, Newcastle may well hold an advantage in the race for Neves, as they could theoretically use their relationship with Al-Hilal to facilitate the loan move in the winter transfer window.

Spurs Web Opinion

This feels like a very dangerous precedent to be setting, and I fear it will lead to even more murky transfer deals. What’s to stop a player from moving to Saudi Arabia to get the big wages, and then still coming back to play in England anyway?

With all the talk of shady transfers of late, this feels like a big step backwards in the battle to gain some transparency and legitimacy in the game.

The Independent’s Miguel Delaney says there is a feeling inside Tottenham Hotspur that they have a good chance to get back into the Champions League.

Ahead of the start of the season, most pundits did not give Spurs any shot of competing for the Champions League spots, with some even suggesting that the Lilywhites might struggle to finish in the top half of the table after losing Harry Kane (Paul Merson – Sky Sports).

However, Ange Postecoglou has proved many of his critics wrong so far this season and despite their back-to-back losses against Chelsea and Wolves, Tottenham still remain just two points behind table toppers Manchester City.

While any talk of an unlikely title bid has been parked after the last few results, several pundits have suggested that Spurs are still very much in the running for a top-four finish (Optus Sport).

Tottenham want to return to Champions League

Delaney has now written in his column that those inside the North London club now sense an opportunity to get into the Champions League ahead of schedule.

This is because, according to the new rules, England could be in line for five Champions League spots, with an extra spot set to be handed to the two best-performing leagues in Europe in terms of UEFA coefficient points.

That means that a fifth-place finish could be enough to see Spurs return to Europe’s premier club competition.

Spurs Web Opinion

With Man Utd and Newcastle now in danger of not qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League, there is a possibility that England will not be awarded an extra place in the competition next season.

So, Tottenham will have to set their aim on a top-four finish rather than relying on Man City and Arsenal to do them a favour by going deep into the competition.

Tottenham Hotspur have a lot of work to do after the international break, and will be looking to bounce back from two defeats. So, here are the games they’ve got lined up, and a look at their rivals’ schedules, too.

The ten-game unbeaten run in the league for Ange Postecoglou came crashing to an end in dramatic style against Chelsea last week. Two red cards, big injuries, and numerous VAR calls ended up in a 4-1 win for the Blues.

With suspensions and injuries to deal with, Spurs fielded a weakened team against Wolves at the weekend and paid the price. Despite leading for much of the game, the Lilywhites capitulated in the final moments and fell to a 2-1 defeat at Molineux.

Tottenham have some time to regroup now, with the international break leaving us without domestic action for the next ten days. Here’s what is on the agenda for Spurs and their rivals when the Premier League resumes.

Tottenham’s next five games:

December 3 – Man City vs Tottenham
December 7 – Tottenham vs West Ham
December 10 – Tottenham vs Newcastle
December 15 – Nottingham Forest – Tottenham

Manchester City’s next five games:

November 25 – Man City vs Liverpool
November 28 – Man City vs RB Leipzig (Champions League)
December 3 – Man City vs Tottenham
December 6 – Aston Villa vs Man City
December 10 – Luton vs Man City

Arsenal’s next five games:

Liverpool’s next five games:

November 25 – Man City vs Liverpool
November 30 – Liverpool vs LASK (Europa League)
December 3 – Liverpool vs Fulham
December 6 – Sheffield United vs Liverpool
December 9 – Crystal Palace vs Liverpool

Spurs Web Opinion

A really tricky run of games for us which could not have come at a worse time, so this will be a real test of our squad. The only consolation is City and Arsenal also have a tough run-in, and Liverpool will be busy with a quick turnaround on a lot of games, too.

Here’s how we rated the Tottenham Hotspur players following the opening forty-five minutes of action in this afternoon’s Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

Ange Postecoglou’s side head into the break currently 1-0 ahead.

Guglielmo Vicario: Did well to get down low to save from Lemina just after the half hour mark which was the first time he had been tested. 6.

Pedro Porro: His pinpoint ball across the six-yard box allowed Johnson to tap home. 6.

Eric Dier: Made his first start of the season.  A couple of nervy moments early on. 5.

Eric Dier

Emerson Royal: Has had his hands full with Semedo down the flank.  Booked for a foolish lunging challenge just before half time. 5.

Ben Davies: Made an important block on ten minutes to deny a shot on goal.  Thankfully Wolves have not troubled the Welshman or Dier with trying to get in behind them. 6.

Pape Matar Sarr: Has not played at his usual level, has struggled to make anything happen. 5.

Yves Bissouma: Has not looked as threatening on the ball since his red card at Luton.  Booked and will now miss the match against Aston Villa. 5.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg: Lost possession of the ball on at least four occasions. 5.

Dejan Kulusevski: A clever flick opened the space in behind for Porro to cross to Johnson – Spurs’ biggest threat, especially in the first half hour. 7.

Heung-min Son: Has not had much to play off with so many changes in th side happening behind him, the lack of creativity in midfield is harming the South Korean. 5.

Brennan Johnson: Made a clever run at the back post to tap home to score his first Spurs goal.  Needs to be used as more of an attacking outlet. 6.

Ange Postecoglou has named his Tottenham Hotspur side which will take to the field in this afternoon’s Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Tottenham take to the field at Molineux in today’s early kick off on the back of an eventful match against Chelsea on Monday night which not only saw them suffer their first top flight defeat of the 2023/24 campaign, but also lose a number of key players.

Postecoglou has lost the services of Cristian Romero for the next three matches following his straight red card, while Destiny Udogie sits out today as a result of his one-match ban.

The bad news kept coming for Tottenham yesterday after it was revealed that James Maddison and Micky van de Ven have both been ruled out until next year with respective ankle and hamstring injuries (Sky Sports).

Wolves vs Spurs team news

Richarlison also underwent an operation earlier this week in a bid to rectify a groin issue and will miss the next month, if all goes to plan.

Postecoglou told Sky Sports in yesterday’s pre-match press conference:

“Micky has a hamstring injury which we knew was fairly significant, a couple of months for him.

“Madders is a lot worse than we thought. Next day it wasn’t great, we sent him off for a scan, and probably we’re looking into the New Year.

Richarlison had the operation which we kind of scheduled anyway, he’s been battling with that since day one and the international break is coming up – he should be a month if everything goes well.

“We’ve got a couple of suspensions as well… But Ben Davies is back and available. Pedro Porro is fine and available.”

This is who takes to the field in the Black Country this afternoon:

Wolves: Sa; Semedo, Kilman, Dawson, Toti Gomes; Lemina, Joao Gomes, Bellegarde; Hwang Hee-chan, Ait-Nouri; Matheus Cunha.

Subs: Bentley, Jonny, H.Bueno, Doherty, Doyle, Traore, Sarabia, Silva, Kalajdzic.

Tottenham: Vicario; Porro, Dier, Davies, Emerson; Hojbjerg, Bissouma, Sarr; Kulusevski, Son, Johnson.

Subs: Forester, Dorrington, Phillips, Skipp, Bentancur, Lo Celso, Bryan, Donley, Veliz

Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves will make history on Saturday afternoon when they square up for the first Premier League game or the weekend, as a player from each side will wear a bodycam for the warm-up.

The two sides go into the game at Molineux hoping to bounce back from disappointing defeats last weekend.

Spurs saw their unbeaten run come to an end at the hands of rivals Chelsea on Monday night in a fiery battle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The game ended 4-1 to the Blues, but that result was overshadowed by the sending off of both Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie, as well as five disallowed goals, various other VAR decisions, and injuries to James Maddison and Micky van de Ven.

Spurs part of new Premier League trial

If ever there was a game you’d want to be right there on the pitch with the players, getting into the thick of the action, it was the clash between Spurs and Chelsea. But that may be a possibility in the future, as Tottenham will be part of a trial this weekend which will see a player from each side wearing a bodycam for the pre-match warm-up.

As per the Daily Mail, the trial is part of an “historic partnership” between TNT Sports and the Premier League which will offer fans a “unique perspective” before the match.

The technology was used in pre-season during a game between Aston Villa and Newcastle United, but IFAB laws currently do not permit the use of the devices during a competitive game. It is hoped this trial will change that in the future.

On the idea, Premier League Head of Media Operations and Innovation, Rachael Nightingale, said: “Finding new ways to bring our fans closer to the action on the pitch is a key focus for us. After the success of the bodycam trials at the Premier League Summer Series, we are looking forward to seeing what results this test will deliver for TNT and our audiences around the world.”

Spurs Web Opinion

This is very exciting. I watched Youri Tielemans’ bodycam footage from that pre-season game and it was fascinating to see how fast-paced and intense the games actually are when you’re right down there on the pitch. I’m not sure the warm-up will be quite as enthralling, but it’s a start.

The Athletic have revealed that all 20 Premier League clubs will vote at the next shareholders’ meeting on a ban for loan moves involving players from associated clubs.

The measure has been stipulated to protect the integrity of the competition after several top-flight clubs expressed their concern about potential loan moves between associated clubs.

If there is a temporary ban on such transfers, then it would block deals such as Ruben Neves’ proposed loan switch from Al Hilal to Newcastle (both clubs are owned by Saudi PIF).

The Premier League badge logo on display

Should loans be allowed between associated clubs?

14 of the 20 Premier League clubs would have to vote in favour of the change for such a ban to be adopted immediately ahead of the January window.

The Athletic explain that the aim is to fast-track such a ban as a temporary measure for the January window so there is a little more time to arrive at a longer-term solution that prevents some clubs from taking advantage of the loophole.

Spurs Web Opinion

The rules as they stand are quite problematic as theoretically, Al-Hilal or another Saudi club could sign a number of Premier League stars in January and loan them all to Newcastle, thus allowing the Magpies to override FFP concerns. I fully expect the ban to be passed in the shareholder’s meeting.

Jamie O’Hara says that any hope Tottenham had of keeping pace with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal is now over, given the injuries and suspensions that Ange Postecoglou’s men have to deal with.

Spurs are still licking their wounds from the London derby on Monday and face the prospect of being without several of their key players for the next few weeks.

Micky van de Ven came off with a hamstring injury in the first half and although some reports suggest that the Dutchman might not need surgery, he is expected to be sidelined until the end of the year (The Telegraph).

James Maddison also came off with an injury in the first half against Chelsea while Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie now face suspensions following their red cards on Monday.

Meanwhile, Ryan Sessegnon, Ivan Perisic and Manor Solomon remain out with long-term injuries, while Richarlison has undergone groin surgery and is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks.

Could this be a turning point in Tottenham’s season?

O’Hara believes that we could see Tottenham crumble and lose significant ground to the likes of Man City over the next few weeks.

The former Spurs midfielder told Grosvenor Sport: “I previously said Spurs would struggle if they picked up injuries.

“With the calibre of injuries they’ve picked up to Micky van de Ven and James Maddison, and the three-game suspension to Cristian Romero, they can forget about winning the Premier League.

“I’m absolutely gutted for Spurs, to be honest. Romero was just stupid again like he was all of last season, then Destiny Udogie, who’s been one of their best players, will also be a miss.

“Losing Van de Ven is such a big loss for them – he’s probably been the best centre-half in the Premier League this season.

“People don’t realise how good he’s been and how important he’s been for Spurs. The reason they’ve been able to play that high line is because they’ve been starting centre-backs with pace.

“The fact he’s done his hamstring summed up the game for us – they were too tense and emotional, and we picked up injuries from having too much intensity in our approach.

“It could really affect them – they’ve got some big games coming up against Wolves and Manchester City – and they’re going to be without Van de Ven for, I’d say, six weeks.

“They’re still second in the table and they need to take positives – they’re still above the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool – but Monday was a disaster for them.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Most Spurs fans never seriously thought we were in the title race anyway. Perhaps some would have started dreaming of the impossible if we had brushed Chelsea aside, which we looked on course to do in the first 20 minutes of Monday’s game.

Our excellent start to the season means that we will still be in touching distance of the top four spots even if we have some poor results over the next month.

Ahead of the weekend’s action in the Premier League, it has been revealed that Tim Robinson will be the referee for Tottenham’s game against Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs head into the clash against Wolves looking to bounce back from a disappointing 4-1 defeat against Chelsea on Monday night.

The North London side were involved in a chaotic affair which kept the match officials very busy at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with two red cards, numerous VAR decisions, and five disallowed goals.

Ange Postecoglous men put in a rallying display regardless, and will have a chance to return to the top of the Premier League if they beat Wolves. That is, at least until Manchester City take on Chelsea on Sunday evening.

Unfortunately, this season has been plagued by controversial refereeing and VAR issues. Managers like Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp have already called for change from the PGMOL, and Postecoglou’s opponent on Saturday, Gary O’Neil, recently admitted he has given up on referees (BBC Sport).

Who is the referee for Wolves vs Spurs?

Suffice to say, all eyes will be on the match officials this weekend. Now, the Premier League has released details of those in charge of Tottenham’s visit to Molineux.

Tim Robinson will be the referee on Saturday, with Timothy Wood and Wade Smith as his assistants. Thomas Bramall will be the fourth official.

Over in VAR, Paul Tierney will be the one at the monitor, with Sian Massey-Ellis as his assistant.
